Used barley as spawn?
    #9464235 - 12/19/08 08:24 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

If anyone here is familiar with making beer you know that you select barley then run hot water through it to extract the sugars and starches.  This process makes wort, which many people use as an additive to agar. However most people buy this in a concentrated form.  What I'm interested in is using the leftover grain for spawn.  Obviously mycellium grows on the nutrients in the barley but if it has already been extracted would there be anything left for the mycellium?  The reason I ask is because there is a micro brewery just up the street and I could probably get the grain for free if I talk to the brewmaster.  Not that there are problems finding rye/wheat/whatever grain but getting something for free is always tasty.  I already tried the coffee shops in town for substrate additive but it seems someone beat me to the punch.  Unless someone has already tried this and failed or has a good reason it won't work I will try and keep you guys updated on success or failure.

ive tried it, it worked out okay.  not too good.  but then again this was in my ultra rookie stage.    try it out.  i dont know though, because all the grains are cracked in brewing.    in mycology we try to not crack the grains.

i've never used spent barley, but i was intrigued by barley and ran some experiments with it.

if using a spore syringe to inoculate, there's a good chance the barley will start to decompose before the mycelium has colonized.  liquid culture may be able to colonize enough to prevent, or at least overcome developing bacteria.  i'd recommend a grain to grain for best results.  again, though, this was for bacteria with nutrients present

i would recommend letting the spent barley dry out some, as barley has a tendency to retain a lot of moisture that may inhibit growth of some nasty bacteria.

I was planning on doing a grain to grain actually.  As for cracked kernels I don't remember every cracking the grain to extract wort.  Don't you just run hot water through it?  I figure that this hot water extraction will allow endospores to germinate and then be destroyed in the sterilization cycle.  I'll try and get ahold of the brew master and try to get the grain.

Don't know about wort, but it seems to me if its the sugar they are taking out,one could add some back.I've used steam rolled barley and it worked great.

I thought about that as well since I often make beer I find that I have tons of grains throw away. I was thinking that after it is spent, maybe adding some flour to it would be he way to go. But I am a noob with mycology so Ill get back to you when i try it

I have been reading up on this too since I am an all-grain home brewer. But I have not done it yet. There is a little bit of information out there, but I didn't find any tried and true procedures.

The brewer does crush the grain before mashing, and in the process of mashing starch is converted to malt sugar.

And microbes of all types love malt sugar, so you should try to work as sterile as possible, and colonize quickly.

Many sources recommend only using spent brewer's grains as a supplement in the substrate since it is so nutritious. It is also acidic, so you might consider adding gypsum.

Dayum this thread is 7 years old. Welp. lets use it. restarting this thread as I am going to be posting relevant information soon enough. Have a friend who makes his own beer and they toss their spent barley. What do the rest of you guys here on the shroomery thing about this? Could I spawn oysters to 60/40 barley and wheat?

Your probably better off asking that in advanced mycology. That's more for medicinal/edible mushrooms. My opinion would be to dry it well and rehydrate as needed. The yeast and other things in the barley once pced are pretty nutritious. Honestly it might even work as a substrate that's why I suggest asking in advanced mycology.

Yes you can do it just fine as spawn as long as you dont mind the grains very wet and stick together like mud.
