Some just work better & last longer than others. Vicks brand is Okay.
Try any GoodWill, Salvation Army or thrift store. They usualy have several kinds for just a few bucks each. The bigger the water capacity, the better.
The raccoon found one that has two 2.5 gallon tanks on it, for $6, like new. I think the name brand is BioAironic or some such crap. It works like a champ.

in your opinion, is it a good thing to do the triple coke bottle thing mention in the MMGG? you know, where you run the humidity through three coke bottles to bring down the condensation level?

I don't know . Back when, the raccoon first started. He did 4 one pint cakes. Then jumped into grains, seeds, bulk substrate & casing & never went back to cakes.
Sorry I can't be of any more help.

I think that perlite does a well enough job of humidification so that humidifiers are not even needed. Cakes seem to do fine with this setup. SWIM also dunks cakes after birthing and after each flush. Hope this is some help.

if your still doing cakes i'd stick to the perlite. From what i understand there are 2 basic different humidifyers: evaporative and non eveporative. Vicks i believe is evaporative meaning it evaporates with heat, which can be good or bad depending on if you need the heat.
