Easy non PC teks....
#9459489 - 12/18/08 11:37 PM (15 years, 3 months ago) |

I am looking for an easy tek for something that will be viable for a cheap grow. I won't be using a pressure cooker. Probably will just boil use boil tek.
What would be my best substrate for caking. I was thinking Organic Popcorn, what do you all think.
Any input would be appreciated.
I want this to be an easy and cheap op for personal use. As the spores were given to me.

The only thing you can use w/o a PC is BRF PF-tek jars. Everything else you NEED a PC. That's if you use your own stuff and don't order a Growbag or something - which is all ready to go.

^ He's not calling you a noobie - he signs every single post w/ that.
And w/ no PC - there is nothing else you can work w/ making your own substrate. Why do you think they say a PC is essential for this hobby? You can get a small PC for $30-40.

ROFL. oh god thats classic! Im glad i looked at this thread.. what noobieshroomie is saying is NO you can do nothing else without a pc.. trust me... against everyone elses advisement.. i have tried.. im sure others have tried and do/dont care to admit that they've tried.. dont waste your time.. you might as well spend the 2 hours of your life that you would be trying to boil grain pissing into the wind.. youll get farther that way

Ooooweeeee... Aren't you touchy?
You should still get a pressure cooker, as you'll be stuck doing PF Tek otherwise. I mean, you could do PF and spawn to bulk substrate, but I don't know how you'd go about sterilizing your bulk.
Besides, you can cook food in it. It's not like a PC is strictly drug-related paraphernalia...

Bulk subs don't get sterilized - just pasteurized. Pouring near boiling water on them in a big pot and leaving them for a cpl hrs is usually good enough to accomplish it.

i actually read on here today.. an old post from hippie chick.. that she prefers to sterilize her substrate.. she's pulled 5 and 6 flushes out of a 5lb substrate and grown mushrooms as big as her arm.. im not going to argue with those results..

I have decided for my easy tek, to do a PF style cakes and then put them in casings with pasteurized coco coir and a peatmoss + verm layer for casing.

Yes that's totally fine. I'm also in the same boat as you - I don't plan on getting a PC yet, but I'm doing a bulk grow next. I'm gonna make like 16 BRF cakes and spawn to bulk, either from Weretheshit.com or Highmountaincompost.com - they have real good shit lol, and it's prepasteurized, field capacity, and ready to use right outta the bag. All I gotta do is crumble my cakes and mix.

Cakes to coir is the way to go for you.
Coir is easy to prepare: just hydrate with boiling water and cover with foil for a few hours.
I use a mix of 4:1:1 coir - verm - coffee. You can spawn cakes to it by crumbling them or sticking them in a blender even.

I hate to sound like a snob, but a PC was only like $39.99 for 8 quarts. I mean $40 is worth the ease of mind IMO.

you can use millet. load up mason jars 3/4 & filter disk and boil them.
first let the millet soak for 24h, then rinse them and boil them for an hour and a half. let them sit overnight, then boil them for an hour and for an hour after the second day.
it works.

Thats a lot of work lol. Might as well just buy a PC. Time is worth more then saving 40 bucks. If mycology ends up not being his thing he can always use the PC to cook seafood. win/win

noobieshroom sorry for calling you an ass just looked like I was getting called a noob. Why I don't doubt but im here for information and thats what this place is for.
Anyways, like I said this is something I don't want to invest in for a quick easy personal op.
I have teenage boys and I don't want them to start wondering what dad is cooking jars for in a pressure cooker.
I have come to the conclusion that the best route for me is to purchase a presterilized rye bag and innoc to that and then spawn to casings all in the privacy of my office.

Use the "Disgusting grain tek" all you do is soak the grain for 24 hours then simmer for 15 mins then boil in a pot for 2 hours, make sure you only use small jars as the more mass the more hard it is for the heat to penetrate, this was discovered by Art vandely, I have tried it and had 100% success rate and Art lives by it
The grain must only be wheat grain or rye grain, nothing else will work.

The first tray has started knotting, so hopefully I'll be able to post up some pin porn soon.
Btw I really like the ultra rhizo mycelium of a clone culture!

i bought mine on the internet. after shipping it was no more then $45
EDIT: by the way im not trying to be snobby its just that out of all the methods i have read about (this is my first grow so i am not a professional) using a PC has been the simplest and most efficient. So, for $40+$5 shipping it is much worth the investment in my opinion thus far.

I dont have any kids (and me and my fiance dont plan on it for at least another 7 years) but i figured 1 hour in a PC is still a simple way to hide it since it requires the least amount of time to sterilize. Also PC's are not a uncommon piece of a equipment. at least in my family we used them all the time so i figured it was no big deal.
