Woodworking/Rocking chairs
    #9457049 - 12/18/08 04:27 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

I've been bragging about my fathers woodworking for years and I finally decided to go get a few pics of his recent projects to show off.  He got into building rocking chairs lately.  These things are true works of art!  He's got the damn things sitting all over his house now, and more in the works.  Heres a look at some of them.

The one on the left is myrtle, the one on the right is walnut.  The myrtle has a great grain to it and only grows in Oregon.  Walnut is just a classic.

This one is made of purpleheart.  Yes, thats the woods natural color.

This one is purpleheart and bubinga.

This project under way is made of wenge.  Its gonna be gorgeous.  Wenge has an awesome grain and its a beautiful dark color.

But this is my favorite chair so far.  Its a little too busy for some people, but I love it!  Its a patchwork of about 8 or 9 different woods (I wouldn't even try to name them all).  But everything here is the natural color and grain of the wood.  Nothing has been stained or colored in any way.

Heres a couple closeups to see the beautiful detail and contrasts of the different woods.

He says he can spend anywhere from $400 to $1200 in materials per chair depending on what kind of wood he uses.  And it takes him about 120 man hours to build one.  And he does it all himself in his little shop.  Yeah, I'm impressed.

these chairs are very reminiscent of works by Sam Maloof, I've
been a long time admirer of his work and your fathers variants
are superb

My Dad actually got the patterns from a guy who makes chairs based on the Sam Maloof works.  He then modified them a bit, but they're basically the same style.  He's been in contact with quite a few famous chair makers and they all have complimented his work.  He is now in the process of putting together a website to showcase his work and eventually start selling them.
