Something I don't quite understand...

Ok, I'm interested in growing some shrooms but have a quick question.
I was reading up on the PF Tek and it doesn't seem like I need a spore syringe to begin cultivating... But then I hear on another message boards that I'd need to pick up a spore syringe off the net.
Now, either I can't read or I must've misread something but, do I need to order anything off the net other than buying:
BASIC MATERIALS LIST FOR CULTIVATION PF jar preparation and culturing (Stage one) (Domestic products - supermarket - department - drugstore - hardware store) 1. Measuring cups and spoons 2. Large pot for steaming 3. Shoulderless half-pint jars with lids (Kerr or Ball) 4. Organic brown rice flour (organic food stores) 5. Horticultural vermiculite (medium or fine grade - not powdery) 6. Distilled or filtered drinking water 7. Heavy duty tin foil 8. Heavy duty (professional grade) masking tape 9. Ice pick (for punching needle holes in the culture jar lid)
Mushroom growing (Stage two) Pet shop - Hardware store 1. 10 gallon aquarium 2. Cut piece of transparent plastic (Plexiglas) - (terrarium chamber partition) 3. Strips of wood with connectors and screws (terrarium lid) 4. Plastic film and thumb tacks (terrarium lid) 5. Small wall type thermometer 6. "All purpose" water spray bottle with an adjustable nozzle (hardware and grocery stores). Procure one that gives a good strong spray for instant humidification. Avoid recycled kitchen product sprayers. This is a critical piece of equipment. Only a good quality sprayer (a couple of dollars at a hardware store) can immediately supercharge the dual chambered terrarium with high humidity. 7. Wire screen - plastic containers - plastic bags - (drying mushrooms) 8. DESICCANT (drying mushrooms) (scientific - chemical - lab supply)
Spore printing and spore syringe making (Stage three) 1. Micro curved cuticle (finger nail) scissors (cosmetics - drug store) 2. Denatured alcohol (fuel - hardware stores) 3. Tequila shot glass and eye dropper (sterilizing and flaming) 4. Glass stirring rod (Scientific supply) 5. Plastic syringes (10cc or bigger) and 18 gauge 1 1/2 inch needles. Large sized syringes are good (20cc - 65cc) as well as extra long needles if available. (Retail medical - health supply - pharmacies - drug stores - scientific and lab supply)
??????????????????????
I don't quite see anything that I need to purchase that I won't be able to find at the local hardware store and health mart. Something I'm missing?

if this is your first time, i suggest you buy syringes instead of making your own. you may do everything else perfect but if you make dirty syringes all your work will be for nothing.

Mind elaborating on that? What do ya mean by dirty syringe?
Based on the tek, isnt the syringe made after you've grown the shrooms?

If you do not sterilize the syringe inside and out properly, you can transfer contamination from the syringe to the jars. If the contam is in the syringe, all the jars will probably be infected. If it is outside on the syringe, you may only get contam in your first jar if you sterilize between jars. It is also hard to judge how sterile your space is the first time you attempt to make syringes. If you want to do it anyway, go ahead. I hope it works out for you. As an addition, does anyone else use PF syringes right out of the box? I had a dream about someone who does and they haven't had any contams. Just wondering how sterile most vendors are.

Shampy,
Thats a pretty good list you got there.
Considering you didn't ask a bunch of newbie questions I'll give you 2 thumbs up!!!
You might also want to get the following:
Lysol spray.....never can have enough of this!!
An incubation chamber.....you will want your jars at around 84 degrees F. If you need help making one.....please feel free to PM me.
You might also want to ad a bubbler to your growing chamber. You would use an Aquarium air pump....air hose.....air stone....and a drinking glass. Fill the glass with water and h2o2.....stick the air stone in and let it get wet for a little while.....then turn your pump on....and you have a bubbler. I have a filter disc on my bubbler.
About making your own syringes.....I made my own the very first time I started. If you are clean and can follow dirrections.....make your own. If you are worried you will fail.....buy some.
good luck!

For some strange reason, I went to a bunch of stores and was unable to come across any glass jars. Might be a ridiculous question but, if the jars were plastic, could they still be boiled?
Hmn, one more thing.
I couldnt find the vermiculite, is there anywhere I can order it from?

I had a hard time finding vermiculite too. The one and only place that sells vermiculite here (not premixed) is our ACE hardware store. Plastic, I'm sure it's possible, but no way in hell I would do it.

*shakes with frustration*
Better start looking for an Ace's now..
Seriously, this looking for a glass jar thing with no shoulders is really getting to me.
*EDIT*
WTF? I just went through a bunch of thumbnails and all I see are jars with shoulders people are using. Wouldn't this make it a pain in the arse to take the cake out?

If I read your post right you are asking if you will grow mushrooms from the materials on the list WITHOUT A SPORE SYRINGE? How will you innoculate the jars then? You have to start with SPORES of mushrooms to grow mushrooms. That's why you have to buy one or get some kind shroomer here to send you a Spore print.

Well...
Something came up back when I first posted this, I couldn't find vermiculite anywhere... Come to think of it, I dont remember if I tried Ace's, any other ideas where I might be able to pick it up? Don't think Home Depot carries it, need to check again. (Should they?)
So I just want to make sure... heh....
The syringes, I *COULD* make them on my own? I just need to be safe from getting them contaminated, right?
As for the chamber and what not, in your opinions, what would be one of the more easier ones to construct?
Hopefully I won't bump this again 5 months from now ;P, Shamp

SCrew the Brown RIce and Vermiculite Go to the Advanced section and read up on Popcorn kernels as a substrate. It looks like taht would be a fine substitue if not better MUCH easier to case
