Coir Help!!!
    #9446748 - 12/16/08 11:51 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Okay, this might not be the right forum to place this thread in, but with me fuckin up my trade rating 3 years ago, I'm sure if I put this in the marketplace, I'm just askin to be shot down.  haha, but I populate this thread so, I've had a chance to someone clear the mark here.

Anyway...  Today, I've got my verm, perlite, peat moss, gypsum and lime...  Only thing I really need now is COIR.

I've searched at 2 Wal-marts, 2 Orscheln's Home & Farms, a Westlake Ace Hardware, and a Lowe's.  I can't find a DAMN place that sells any sort of Coir (even FIBER)...

Is there anyone here willing to help me out with this?  I've got PayPal, if you require payment for it.

Thanks.

BTW, if possible, I'd like to put a rush on this--2 of my jars should be fully colonized and ready to case by the beginning of next week.  THANKS!!!!

If you have Paypal you can order bricks for a few bucks a piece online.

I found coir readily available at Canadian Tire. If you are in the states, whatever the american equivalent of that kind of store is, try there. Should be sold anywhere that has a yard & garden center, same kinda places that sell verm and perlite. Also I heard pet stores have that kinda stuff? Maybe.

If you're located anywhere near me, I'd be happy to give you a brick, but I'm not a fan of shipping. (PM if you're interested)

You should check PET STORES. They carry it as reptile bedding. That's where most people get it.

You would THINK wouldn't you?  6 places... 6 "Home & Garden" sections... 3 places with Verm and Perlite...  Not a damn one with Coir...

6 places... 6 "pet" sections...  6 places with "bedding" material...  Not a damn one with Coir...

I was fuckin astounded!  Especially at Lowes not having it...

Yea, I thought about it (I'm prbably going to), but if possible, if I gotta shell out money for this hobby, I'd rather hand it out within the community (members, vendors, etc.) than retail stores, ya know?  So, figured I' ask.  ^_^

Knowing where you live might help.

I hear ya.  The bitch about ordering online, is a brick is only a few bucks, but the shipping is like $8-10, so you end up spending alot on a brick.  I just hit ebay tho, and saw this - it's 5 bricks for $24 w/ free shipping, plus at the bottom it says something about another rebate.  That's less than $5/ea. shipped tho, which is a good deal IMO.  It's a real long link so I made it tiny.

Go to a real pet store. One that sells reptiles. You won't find coir in most of the box store pet sections.

Will probably do that, J3.  Thanks!

BUT, isn't "Fiber" the type you DON'T want?

Coconut fiber is the most widely used one.  The other is coconut husk.  I've had success with the husk, but I think everyone will agree that fiber is the one widely used.

Ah... yea.  I had the "husk" picture in my mind when I thought about "fiber."  Thanks again!

im using husks on a grow right now, it sucks. its taking longer to colonize than the actual coir. plus its in big chunks, kinda like wood chips. but hey if thats all you can find, that all you can find.

Okay, one last bit of help...

When you mix up your bulk, you go by parts or percentages based on weight (grams, etc.)...  With Coir, do you go by DRY weight or field capacity weight?
