I like no.9:

They are all incredible, though.  Those young people can do a lot of damage.  Lots of faces in the photos, too.

I've noticed there are a lot of people who don't have anything to do with protests usually, at the forefront.

the riots stemmed from the death of a 15yo, maybe more had died
previously, regardless the shooter is in custody on murder charges

The world community, more power to the youth.  The 15 year old's death was a catalyst for bringing out issues that needed addressing.  I hope things go well for them.

"I'm very struck by the median age of those involved. They are young. It fits with the political and economic situation in Greece that the young adults protest, and they are usually the the first demographic to take up arms, but I can't help but feel the beginnings of a major generational rift. We are seeing the tearing of two generations, one - founded the modern world, think regionally, and have investment in the status quo and systems that sustain them; The other - globally-minded, constantly connected, fed up with the operative systems of the world that leave them at great disadvantage. Revolutions always seem to be led by the young, but for some reason, this divide seems to cross borders and oceans, as a generation reaches out from the one before it".

> Cops killing young people for no good reason.

Witnesses reported the kid was throwing a molotov cocktail at the cop that shot him.  I would have shot the kid too, assuming that witnesses are reporting correctly.  Being burned to death doesn't sound very fun to me.

People don't riot for this long with this much energy because a kid got killed.  There had to be a lot of pressure building for a long time.  The kid was an excuse, nothing more.  The 'straw that broken the camels back'.  I'd like to know what the underlying pressure is and where it comes from.  I find it hard to respect rioters.  There are civilized means to express oneself without damaging random innocent people's property.

I agree with seuss, especially cuz rioting is often counterproductive and often wrong.

We should be careful to distinguish between the people demonstrating and doing mild acts of illegal conduct and those who are commiting serious moral wrongs (breaking windows of innocents, et cet).

I jsut wish if the issue is bullshit police actions people would wise up and see:
a) you have to demand and vote according to yoru wishes,
b) you can't vote for someone who opposes your beliefs and then get pissy about it as if its a surprise (obama folks with the drug war and state power)
c)  rioting reinforces the perceived need for the same actions you are protesting

Legalize victimless crimes, provide equal justice via institutional reforms that treat all equally, provide mechanisms to remedy acts of state abuse that punish the perpetrators (institutional and individual), and see these problems disipate.

The problem is these riots make the silent majority see an increased need for the police and reinforces classist prejudices that continue support for victimless crimes and police favoritism.

Pretty much all these things apply to buisness-community relations as well.

What?

Did the bank kill their friend?

And this cop just got arrested?  Never let silly events like a trial or conviction of guilt get in the way of a good riot!

Where did you read that the teenager had a Molotov cocktail when he was killed?

Anyway I think it's likely that in reality the people are protesting many things and a wide variety of them are anarchists/socialists. Many of them may just feel that police repression is bad in Greece and this was the last straw.

It was in the initial stories of the incident.  I haven't been able to find anything about it with all of the other noise about the riots.  I'm also not claiming that it is true, but it makes a lot more sense than 'police randomly shot some kid for no reason'.

That the boy had thrown a firebomb at the police is listed in most of the stories I have read.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jPgavg-fdTXKlEsmhMhc-L8UtsLw

Quote:

According to the charge sheet, Korkoneas is alleged to have killed Grigoropoulos on Saturday during a clash with around 30 youths in the central Athens district of Exarchia.

Under questioning by a magistrate, the source said Korkoneas indicated he had acted out of self defence when the group began throwing firebombs and other objects while shouting that they "were going to kill them."

According to forensic experts and independent experts acting for the Grigoropoulos family, the bullet "is a bit deformed, which showed the bullet touched a hard surface" before entering the boy's chest.

they are motivated, but please their cause was laughable.

also, i do not think rioting was the best way to protest a shooting, a organized protest sure, but causing millions of dollars of damages to private citizens and businesses is silly...
