Please, if you insist on still using IE

Download Sandboxie, it's the only (OK, not only, but most user-friendly) tool that will truly protect you.

If you want to switch browsers and don't know what to get, look here.

If that's too much, here's a quick rundown:
Firefox: Fast as a base install, slowish with addons depending on what you install.
Safari: Fast, but I don't like it personally because of the crashing issues with my machine.
Opera: All around very stable and fast, a lot of ways to customize it.
Chrome: Quickest browser on the WWW. Has all of the same features of IE without all of the (known) security vulnerabilities. If you're going to switch back to IE after it's patched and the patch is stable, use this.

What's everyone else's favorite?

I'm formatting for a re-install soon, convince me to switch from IE 8, and which browser to switch too.

If you need convincing, then keep using IE... you deserve what you get.  The list above is pretty good and accurate.

Maybe I am wrong, but I am going to guess that anyone not willing to switch from IE is probably not willing or aware to download a sandbox for it.

I'm curious if Ythan has stats about what browsers we use the most here.

I would like to put out a big thank you to all of you who kept saying how bad IE is.  I switched a few months ago to FireFox 2 and couldn't be happier!  I've almost no problems with Firefox unlike the regular problems I had with IE. Again, thank you!

*bump* for a quick follow up.

I've been trying other browsers for a little while now.  For my purposes, they are are pretty similar except for ONE (rather annoying thing).

Compared to IE, the fonts in chrome and firefox look like garbage.  CNN is a good example.

Messing around and changing defaults in firefox doesn't seem to change all of the text (only some).

Any rememdies/similar experiences?

I use Firefox, Opera, and on occasion IE. I only use IE if I am having trouble with my codec installations and I want to view media now! I mainly use opera.

Is no one aware that chrome spies on you? Your every keystroke gets sent back to google. They are as bad as ms, except ms doesn't have the nerve to do all that. I'm sticking with FF.

I recommend Firefox by default. For ex-IE people its very easy to switch and it shows plenty reward for most people.

A friend of my father got his first laptop and I was showing him around on it. He got a small lecture on the evils of Microsoft, why Open Source is important and why one really should not be using Internet Explorer.

And really, its very easy to grasp for a newbie. Simply point to how much trouble you are spared with something like firefox (most aggressive popups, hijackers etc only attack IE), assure them its just as user friendly then point out its free

Said friend of my father became a believer overnight. He visited a lot of adware intensive sites and was spared the usual barrage of popups he was usually welcomed with. And he found the argument that catching a virus (trouble!) was somewhat less likely quite convincing also.

Its simply EASIER. Everybody wants easy, especially newbies.

Sure did.

I still somewhat prefer the appearance of fonts with IE, but now that I've been using firefox for a while I'm getting used to them.  The add-ons and skins available for firefox make up for the fonts.

The most dramatic difference for me though, has been switching from Safari to firefox on my mac.  Really, I think everything about firefox is superior to Safari.

All-around a good move and I probably won't go back.  While we're at it, does anyone have any "must-have" firefox add-ons?

for those of you who need to use IE with firefox
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419
it will give you a button and a bunch of other options to quickly switch the current page your looking at to IE, best add-on I've found. I only use it for Netflix and it saves some time when you have to open the same page in IE.

I tried adblock with FF. Works well, plus a super tough popup was killed by putting the domain in the special box and banning it.

Adblock is great. About the only time I ever see ads is on this website, since I've got it whitelisted.
