I've had the thought occasionally the the Universe is fucking us over - raping us - till we can't take it anymore.
Once you have had enough of being fucked in the ass, you stand up and tell the Universe to stop, and you take control.
Or maybe you don't take control. Maybe there is no control. Maybe you just get raped until you die or you overdose on opiates to stop the pain of being fucked in the ass.
Maybe once you accept that you are nothing, and are humbled enough to accept the Universe putting it in your ass, do you then begin to enjoy the Universe fucking you?

Care to elaborate? It might seem more compelling if the Universe was on an endless cycle of Big Bang/Big Crunch/Big Bang/etc, but the latest cosmological theories point towards the Universe accelerating as it expands outwards to inevitably rip every atom apart in a sea of entropic heat death--it's fini after this one.

This is why I'm somewhat uncomfortable with the term "recurrence" in this context. It seems to imply that our experiences will occur over and over again, like a film that starts over at the beginning as soon as it ends. I don't believe that this is the case. I believe that our conscious experience itself is eternal, as it emanates from a universe which appears to have no clearly defined beginning or end, and in which time has no objective reality and is most likely an illusion which cannot exist outside of the confines of one's ego.

 Does not the Big Bang count as a clearly defined beginning, in that both time and space were created along with it?
Time is a tricky bastard to define, I'll agree. Certainly we can alter our subjective perceptions of it, but this does not mean that it does not exist objectively--things still move and events still progress even if we're not looking at them.
I think it's far more likely that our consciousness (as a human neurological construct) was created when we were born and will cease when we die.
