I think I have a double-header!

I've been watching this guy for about 3 weeks now, thinking that 2 heads were going to come up. Would this be uncommon?

double header, not really common but not really rare either... i doubt it is cristate as the aperical meristem appears to have fully divided into two already

Sadly?! I think it's cool that its got 2 heads! A cristate would be cool as hell too, but I'm happy with the lil guy having two heads. Cant you make a cactus grow into a crest by grafting a certain way? I, for some reason, thought I read something about that a while back.
What would it look like, if one did turn into a cristate?.

cresting is genetic, nothing to do with grafting tek.
with a crested specimen the aperical meristem will stretch rather than divide.

Ahh ok, well that's cool as hell! Stretch huh? Do you happen to have a picture of a seedling doing that? Not saying I think I have one, I just would like to know what it looks like.

I once created a double header by dividing the aperical meristem when I first started growing cacti. It was not a healthy seedling to begin with, and it dies after about a year. I should try again.

i don't have a pic of a seedling crest (i wish i did!) but heres a grown up one to give you an idea...
as you can see the meristem becomes long rather than staying as a single point, just imagine that scaled down into seedling size.

Thanks EG!
Yo Blazed, that would be a pretty interesting experiment to do again. You think you could make one a quad-head? That would be cool.
And Uare, wow! Thats crazy! I get it now, so the meristem will stretch sideways, and the growth will be coming out the whole length of the meristem, whereas a double header actually split in two and now has two meristems. Coooooooool

Yeh I only tried it the one time and it worked. I knew nothing about cacti then,, but I knew it worked for plants. I had a lot more time back then to play aorund. I'm sure I'll try it again.

Yeah I cut part of it. Cutting out the entire aperical meristem will only cause it to pup. It was a long time ago, so I forget exactly. But I think the key is cutting out the top of opposing ribs. They'll heal, and the remaining sides will divide into two tips.

I didn't perform that maneuver. I believe the stone is put as a spacer to stop the sides from healing together. You know a silly amount more than me about cacti health, so enlighten me if you figure it out.
I would guess just slice vertically down through the center of the vascular ring, maybe cut a V-wedge?
