I've tripped on mushrooms 5 times now. Two of these trips were high dose. I took 9g's (the mushrooms weren't completly dried...kinda like raisins) and I had the most intense experience of my life. I flipped out at first, but I still was thinking rationally...and I came out alive.
Anyways, I want to trip again...but my mom mentioned something to me about a great uncle (one of my grandpa's brothers) who has schizophrenia. She told me he used to smoke pot and do other drugs. From what I know, he's the only one in my family with schizophrenia.
So, what are my risks of developing schizophrenia in the future? I'm never going to go over 3g's when I take mushrooms (which I know for a fact I can handle...) Should I trip again, or should I just stick with smoking/eating weed?
Is schizophrenia really all that bad? what happens when you have it anyway?

any traumatic experience can exacerbate a present or latent mental illness, there's plenty of evidence that schizophrenia has a genetic link. I'd be careful with the heavy trips. take extra care to make sure you're in a happy environment.

as far as i know, tripping only makes you get schizophrenia when you already are going to have it later in life, it basically just brings it on faster.

Hey I have done a few essays on Psychoactive Drug Based Disorders etc. as part of a Psychology paper. This however does not make me an expert in any way as I was only researching info from textbooks etc. and not actually having contact with the real people. Scizophrenia itself is actually rarely induced by any drug (unless, as was stated before, you had a latent form of it already - however if this is the case, the scizophrenia will usually appear after the individuals first or second trip. You handled a strong mushroom trip, if you were going to get scizo from drugs, it most likely would have appeared already) What is much more common is scizophrenia-like illnesses. But even these are pretty rare. If you can still think rationally during a strong trip, then it is not likely that you will have this happen to you. This usually only happens with people taking way too many hallucinogens (upwards of 20 trips a year) who slowly drive themselves into insanity. This is when people do not know when to stop. They may notice that each trip is getting more and more disturbing, but continue tripping anyway. The best advice I could give is to limit your tripping to no more than once every two weeks or so (not only for your mental health but also because if you trip more than this it will quickly loose its fun and become repetitive, habit forming) and if you have any bad experiences, have a break for a while. After a bit more experience you will find dosages and frequency that is comfortable for you personally. Oh, I should also mention that with the scizophrenia-like illnesses that developed from hallucinogen abuse, these usually go away within 6 months to a year of abstinince (not tripping) whereas scizophrenia is usually with people for life. There is plenty of info on this on the internet, and text books, just make sure you have a reliable source as there is a lot of bullshit around as well. Good luck with your future travels! Oh and by the way, there may be a few innacuracies in here as it was a couple of months ago that I wrote the paper, and I haven't referenced from it. But this is the general gist of it in that area

Believe it or not , there are currently several studies being done with psilocybin to aide in the relief of depression , use with violent predatory criminals , schizoprenia , etccccccc........... Some believe it will help control many of these disorders , if not eliminate them . But this all in theory at this point . It would be advisable to discuss your situation with a doc , and be honest with him , there is a thing called "Doctor/Patient " confidentiallity .........he can not disclose the info ! And if you are not honest with him he cant properly aid you . Good Luck

We all from time to time teeter on the edge of sanity ........it is a balance, some of us just fall down a lot harder, some enjoy the ride , some never notice it . Sometimes all it takes is the slightest thing to send us into oblivion ...........including chemicals as simple as caffine . But in the end "Fuck it all , and fuck it with no regret ".............name that song ?????
