casing in the terrerium questions
    #942979 - 10/08/02 01:21 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

i was wondering what is done differently with casings in a terrerium as opposed to cakes. misting/fanning, use of drip sheild, perlite, that type fo stuff. i know cakes get the misting fanning a few times a day and perlite on the bottom for humidification, but do casings need all that too? should i treat them the same way?
thanks

(There's disagreement about this, but...)

You need to reduce the humidity for casings as compared to cakes. Otherwise you are opening them up to contamination (usually green mold) and reduction of yield potential by saturating the cakes. During cropping, rH should be 85-92%, no more. 90-95% is good for the rest of the time post-casing, but 100% can lead to water buildup on the casings.

If using perlite, that means you need greater air exchange, either by fanning more or setting up a system with an aquarium pump. Without perlite, misting and fanning once in a while will work just as well.

Casings are a little more fickle than cakes, but are well worth it.
