These gnats are making me nuclear...
    #9416742 - 12/12/08 06:30 AM (15 years, 3 months ago)

So, I thought I was getting good stuff w/ the miracle grow organic soil.  Got my San Pedro cutting planted and gave it a first water as I wait for it to root.  Well either the cutting or the soil had shit-eating gnat larva in it because now I have a trillion of them flying around my place and it is VERY irritating.

I have tried watering the plant with soapy water, tobacco water and even just letting it stay dry.  So I've wasted months.  Yes, I could get gnatrol but my space is very limited and I have one freakin pot, so it seemed like overkill.

Do any of you have sure fired ways to give these things a horrifying and permanent end?  I want to hear their screams.  :rofl2:

I've had the same problem before bro,and them damn things took over the house:mad2:Over watered plants can invite fungus gnats to breed in what has become a good medium for the larvae. Also, try to keep as much decomposing organic material out of your potted plants, because the decomposing materials are what the fungus gnats thrive on. Making sure plant soil is dry and decomposing matter is regulated properly should get rid of those gnats.Any repellent with DEET will solve your gnat problem. If none of this works, just uproot your cactus, and dump out that old soil, and get some cactus potting mix.Your soil is most likely infested with eggs, and larvae.

your cutting should be kept dry while rooting, watering an unrooted cutting will make it rot.

put a layer of DE (diatomcious earth) on the surface of the soil, this will kill both adult flies and the larvae that live in the top layer of the soil.
although you wouldn't have had this problem if the soil had been kept dry as it should have been.

also you should be using a soil with a higher drainage capability.

The cutting was hardened and only watered initially at planting, which is what almost every resource on rooting a cactus cutting suggests.  Also, the soil is mixed very well with vermiculite and perlite, so the drainage is excellent.

I'm going to dig and see how well the cactus is doing and if it has any roots.  If it hasn't rooted much or at all I'm going to just run boiling water through the soil a few times and allow it to dry in my oven.
