Healthy Mycellium and Un-healthy Mycellium?
    #9401665 - 12/09/08 06:20 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Is there such thing as healthy mycellium and un-healthy mycellium?  Like if mycellium is lacking nutrients or fresh air does it become un-healthy?  And if yes does anyone have some pics of healthy and un-healthy mycellium growth?  I have been failing miserably.  Out of 5 TMS bags 1 had no growth another I think I crumbled way too early and it didn't grow back at all the third one I crumbled at like 40% and there were bits and pieces that colonized but the rest of the substrate didn't colonize at all.  So I now have one bag that is doing great but seems to have stopped totally about a week ago at like 75-80% and its brother bag seemed to have stopped at like 40-50% colonization so I decided to crumble that brother bag with and I left the more colonized one alone since I haven't had much luck when I crumbled them.  I want at least one bag to make it.  I wasted 2 syringes of two strains with no luck.  Now I have this 3rd strain and I am unsure if it is going to make it at all.  Its such a bummer.  I am wondering if I am going to ever get this right.  All my previous PF jars failed as well....:cryariver:

It sounds like your problem is sterile procedure.  In the future, you'll get better answers if you don't say 'bags', but instead say what is IN the bags, which is what you need help with.  The most common cause of stalling with grains, if that's what you have, is bacteria contamination.

Oh.  Sorry for the lack of info.  I have not been very focused on this project or the learning process lately due to some life issues I have been anxiously coping with.  Yes its a grain bag from tms.  So another question then if you would Mr. Rabbit.  The bacteria can still get through the filter patch's on these bags?  I thought the filter patch's were supposed to keep out the bacteria and contaminates?    I mean I ousted I used a glove box I flamed the tip the only thing I think I did wrong was not crumble the bags before hand so the substrate was very compact.  Is it possible the mycellium over exerted themselves to the point of exhaustion?   Or maybe they used up all the nutrients since they had to work harder?  Anything would be a better answer than bacteria.   Thanks.

Here's what a jar of rye with a bacteria contam looks like:

Greasy, slimy, oily and wet with little or no mycelium growth.

Could try posting some pics of your bags, and detailing your inoculation method. Also, where did your spores come from?  Alot of stores sell shiesty, old or contamed spore syringes.

Thanks Spongiform!  My grain bag looks nothing like that.  It is about 75-80% colonized and has stalled for about a week.  Since this is my first time actually getting the mycellium to form I am not sure what the healthy stuff looks like.  Mine looks a bit dry to me.  That is the only way I can explain it.  I am a bit paranoid about posting pics anymore though I know I could get a more definite answer using pics.  Since it is my last and only bag left I am just going to attempt to get it to fruit even if the yield is minimal.  At least I didn't fail totally.  Miserably yes but not totally.
