Morel-like mushies, out of season
    #9413051 - 12/11/08 02:25 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I have little to no experience hunting edibles, and when I saw these I thought "morel" and culled a few to identify. Theyve thrown me for a loop, though; the chambered, spongy stems dont look like any edible true morels and the whole morel idea is out of the question considering its a chilly December where I live.

Habitat:
Pine needles over bark chips, western Oregon

Gills:
None that I can see, but the inner side of the cap is a lighter grey

Stem: Light orangey-gold at the very base and flushing to a dark grey towards the cap; spongey and honey-combed interior with completely hollow chambers

Cap:
Dusky, almost black grey with hints of chocolate.

Spore print color:
Dunno how Id go about collecting one

Bruising:
Seems to just turn a darker grey where it gets damaged.

Thanks! I was going to add that when freshly cut, a deep, close whiff of it smells almost like acetic acid and burns my sinuses. I almost had to cough. I'm reading that helvella lacunosa is edible when cooked, would you advise for or against?

Black Elfin Saddle

I've heard conflicting reports on both edibility and taste.  Seems that they might be close enough related to poisonous species to spook some people, but that others really enjoy them.

I've found a few and have been temped to try them out, but as of yet haven't put them in my mouth.

After following up on those (not that I don't trust you guys), I think I feel comfortable enough to give them a try. As per suggestions online I'm going to dry them, then parboil them a smidge before sauteeing them or adding them to soups. I'll let you guys know how they taste!

Ugh, just got done washing and cleaning them. All those chambers make nice homes for creepy crawlies, it turns out.

I bet you inhaled the spore cloud.

If you tap a fresh one and look in the sunlight you will see a massive cloud of ascospores spores get shot out of the ascus.

They are real hard to clean but if you can find a clean one they are pretty good.  Reminds me a bit of morels.

These really like to fruit out of season, they are often one of the first and the last mushrooms to fruit.
