spawning to bulk with an old bag

Hey all, so I have a 2 lb bag which is finishing the 2nd flush. I was wondering if this could be spawned to bulk or if i am better off using a fresh bag. I inoculated 2 bags a week ago but one is contaminated and I am paranoid the other wont work. I have my bulk substrate and wanted to get the process moving and had a good block so I was tempted. Any thoughts?

if the first bag is fruiting it might not colonize that well if you were to spawn it to bulk. what i mean is, the mycelium is focusing all its energy into producing fruits right now not building a network of mycelium. so breaking that bag up right now would hurt it. of course you can take some of the grain from that bag to do a grain to grain transfer if you like.

naw, mushrooms can switch from fruiting to colonization fairly easily. so, yes, in theory it would work fine. it does beg the question "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" though... i mean it is fruiting why not let it continue?

Spawning mycelium that has already begun fruiting is generally a bad idea. It won't recover as quickly and your substrate might contaminate, if it even colonizes. Remember, one of the major pinning triggers is colonization of the entire substrate, followed by fresh air exchange and light.

I gotta disagree here - the only problem will come from the substrate itself possibly being contaminated but if there are no signs of that then you are OK to use it as spawn if you wish. Have you ever cloned a mushroom? You cant get more into the "fruiting" stage than that and those little pieces you cut out of the fruit body grow on agar just as fast as a traditional agar to agar transfer. Same applies to the situation of original poster. I have used spent grain jars (IE, finished fruiting) to spawn straw in the past with great success. At least in this case you 1) already have fruits 2) have a back-up bag hopefully growing so if nothing happens on the transfer of existing bag then it is not a total loss.

can anyone else weigh in. Im thinking of not using my bag to spawn since it is the bag with all the mutants.
Hopefully my other bag will come through soon..

ok so the bulk substrate came and now i am super tempter to spawn an old bag because it looks like my new bag will need at least a few more weeks. Someone please talk me out of using a bag which has been through 2 flushes if this is a bad idea. I want the best results and will wait if i should

I don't recommend it. Already fruiting mycelium does very poorly. You risk wasting a lot of time and effort for nothing.
To back me up, a few quoted found using the search engine:
Quote:
Yes. Use fresh spawn for going to bulk. Mycelium that has already fruited and dropped spores tends to lay down and give up, much like a salmon after spawning. Some guys have had limited success and managed to get a few fruits, but you'll never see a monster flush from using spent substrate to spawn more substrate. Not recommended. RR
Quote:
If a colonized substrate has been exposed to room air. (Cake or cased or uncased substrate in a fruiting chamber) It will have come in contact with contaminate spores.
If you pull off a colonized chunk. And, drop it into any nutrient medium. You will also be dropping in contaminate spores. by Agar

It's a bad idea. The mycelium has already gone from veg growth to fruiting stage. Not only will it be slow if it works at all, but the chances of contamination are very high, especially with straw which needs to be colonized within two weeks to avoid the green.
Always use fresh, rapidly growing spawn to go to bulk. RR
I totally agree with RR!~
anyone supprised?

lol, many years of searching behind me.
90% of what I learnt over the years was from searching, I rarely ever posted to ask a question.
