I would freak the fuck out in the desert. I drink 3 gallons of water per day... in the winter. I couldn't imagine how much I would need in the middle of sting country, or how I would even carry it.

So many things there that I enjoy - nature, cacti, stars, etc. Edit: One place I was actually looking at was Arcosanti. If you've never heard of it, check it out. It's an experiment in sustainable living, and you can live there for a few weeks for a price to check it out. It's near Phoenix, AZ. Sort of off topic, but thought I'd mention it.
San Pedro does not grow naturally in any US desert. It is an ornamental plant. There may be some stands of Pedro that have been abandoned, but I don't think this is what he means.
There are a great many cactus thieves out there. Bad karma to steal a psychedelic IMO.
I'm not saying he is stealing, just asking.

tripping in the desert is AMAZING!!! unfortunately i have to drive 10-12 hours to get to it. in AZ they have the mojave and sonoran desert regions. in TX we have the chihuahuan desert, home to many special species of cacti and magical places. so remote, yet so close. i want to go back soon, bad!

San Pedro cactus blooms a large white flower. It grows columnar to six feet and costs twenty dollars per linear foot. Plants one to three feet available grown in the ground organically.
-------------------- But Jimi was feeling good - he'd shared some LSD with a friend, Herbert Worthington, who sat and watched him from the side: 'Jimi started singing "Spanish Castle Magic" and I was high, I was so happy, probably one of the happiest times of my life, being with an Angel [Jimi] and having a woman on each arm. I just went into an LSD laugh.' Jimi looked over to Herbert, realised that he too was peaking out on acid, tried to say something to Herbie, but it wouldn't come out. - Jimi Hendrix "Electric Gypsy"

Does anyone know what parts of this and other psychoactive cacti grow naturally? I've heard that the peyote fields are nearing annihilation. Can anyone confirm this?

peyote grows in the chihuahuan desert exclusively. mostly in mexico, and a very small portion of texas in an area within 20 miles of the rio grande. it has been reported in the Big Bend area (the place i showed the pictures) but it's scarce.
peyote is dissapearing very rapidly. its being picked faster than the species can recover successfully, and the places to pick it in texas are often on private property. it's best to propogate it at home from seed or find a wild one to graft.

Does anyone know of any moves to try and conserve this plant, in the wild that is? I know it's probably quite difficult considering it's legal status, to form any committees or projects to re-establish it's population.

Grow some indoors and convince your friends to do the same is all I can suggest. Maybe have like say, 20 plants and only let them get to a certain size. When they grow more buttons then just take em off and go plant em somewhere.
I know you can't order peyote anywhere (that I've found), but is it legal to order some seeds? I doubt I'd ever eat the plant as it's not cost efficient compared to just getting some san pedro, but it'd be nice to have one.

Yea, seeds are illegal as well. That's the problem. Not only do I live nowhere near an area where they grow wild, but I also have no way of even trying at its cultivation myself. Even an inquiry for seeds would be enough to get into some trouble. God I hate this country.

They grow over 14ft in the wild. trichocereus.com Prices vary. Including shipping I got a 32" rooted, in soil, cactus for 35 bucks.
