Trying some rye in a pressure cooker
    #941224 - 10/07/02 10:23 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

The jars have all been pressure cooked, with the jars ranging from birdseed, rye wheat and millet (although I will never work with milliet again). We are starting a grow log too, so keep checking in......but.....
before i innoculate all the jars, I read somewhere that you have to use filter discs....i dont see why it wouldn't work with just the lids, but i am making a lot of jars and before wasting all my spores on all of them, i was seeing if anyone has any spare advice laying around they want to give....
thanks. happy growing.

there must be some air exchange to the jar. Simply screwing the lid on tight won't work.

I have used this tek with great results and you don't have to order filters. Good luck

I will try that thanks.  I just innoculated them, and i already have the hole punched out on the top.  Do you do anything to sterilize the polyfill?? and will regular cotton work? until i can get that, i am going to carefull place a coffe filter underneath and remove the tape covering the holes.  I hope this works...i have been using bird seed and having no luck.  Vermiculite is the only thing we can get going.  Talk to you later.

yes, you need to make the polyfill lid before you pressure cook, therefore it gets sterilized too. And no, cotton doesn't work. Contams work through it.

just take a shit in a jar and inject into that...no sterilization needed.

I've never heard of that.  Do you shit in the jars yourself?  If so do you go right in them, or do you have to fish it out the toilet?  I've know I read about cow shit and horse shit, but this is all new to me.

polyfil rocks!

i got 12 jars fully colonised in 12 days!

i used Anno's polyfill tek (on rye), and i highly recommend it
just remember to shake the jars thouroughly when the
mycelium is growing in the jar at 5 percent then again when
its 50 percent colonised.

Anno's Polyfill tek:

I can't understand why this hasn't been locked? Is it because she's got a pretty looking girl in her avatar? this is so far from advanced, it's not even funny.. in fact all the answers are in the FAQ! jeez. mods need to not be so easily swayed.

It's no problem at all, this is what the shroomery is for, questions - however 99% of the time if anyone is to post a question in an inappropriate forum, especially one as easily answered as this (not to offend, but this isn't advanced).. it's locked, or moved. but I have a feeling yours wasn't and you were attended to very nicely, and well... that it's because of the picture in your avatar. I just think it's lame.

Regarding filter discs--
You might want to do a search on the use of Tyvek as an alternative to filter discs. There has been some discussion, and sharing of experience (al la Anno) regarding the material. It is readily available in the form of FedEx or USPostal letter sized envelopes --they come complete with an adhesive flap that can be cut up and used as tape to seal needles holes.

My neighbor has used Tyvek with good results. In fact, one night, her pressure cooker blew it's safety plug (very exciting!) and the tyvek covers expanded into little domes about an inch high-- I think the jars might have exploded if lids were in place. After the jars cooled down a bit, all returned to normal. Thinking the jars had sucked in contaminated air while cooling, she (of course) innoculated anyway (in the name of science) and tada!! no contams and normal growth ensued. In fact, all her jars colonized within two weeks, perhaps due to better gas exchange provided by the Tyvek. She tells me that those jars were brf/verm, perhaps grains would present more of a challenge. That said, I believe Anno endorses this stuff, and that's good enough for her.

Good luck!!
jjbb
