not exactly a planet (arbitrary distinction) but it is the largest object in the solar system outside of the Sun, planets and their moons.

As I mentioned to Eightball, "Please explain the philosophical or spiritual nature of this thread or prepare to have it moved."

Thank you.

In reply to:

So is California but we don't see posts about that in the S&P forum.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Yes, well that certainly clears it up doesn't it?

While discussions about aliens can have philosophical and/or spiritual ramifications we are trying to keep the topics in this forum to those which are directly related to the topics in the title of the forum itself.

This is not a science forum.  If you want to keep it here I suggest altering the initial post to include a direction from which the topic can be looked at and/or discussed within the specified parameters.  Barring that I have to ask you where you would like it relocated to.

Thanks,

http://www.gps.caltech.edu/~chad/quaoar/

The Tongva people (sometimes called the San Gabrielino Native Americans) inhabited the Los Angeles area before the arrival of the Spanish and other European people. The name "Quaoar" (pronounced kwah-o-wahr) comes from their creation mythology. In the words of Mark Acu?a, Tongva scholar, dancer and tribal elder:

"'Quaoar' the great force of creation sings and dances the high ones (Dieties) into existence. While Quaoar has no form or gender he is usually referred to with the male pronoun. He dances and sings first 'Weywot' who becomes Sky Father; they sing and dance 'Chehooit' Earth Mother into existence. The trio sing 'Tamit' Grandfather Sun to life. As each divine one joins the singing and dancing, the song becomes more complex and the dance more complicated. In turn 'Moar', Grandmother Moon (a very complex diety), 'Pamit' the Goddess of the sea, 'Manit', the Lord of dreams and visions, 'Manisar' the bringer of food and harvests, 'Tukupar Itar' Sky Coyote (who is also our major hero), 'Tolmalok', the Goddess of Shishongna (the underworld) join in the singing, dancing and creating. And finally the great seven giants who hold up the worlds are created. The High Ones in turn are aided by 'Eagle, Duck, Bear, and Frog' in a grand earth diving story. Frog brings up soil out of the deep dark sea, and the four animals dance it flat and wide. The 'Gods and Goddesses' then furnish the world 'Tovangar' with hills, mountains, trees, rivers, etc. 'Tobohar' (first man) and 'Pahavit' (first woman) are also part of this great 'Creation song and dance cycle'."

That's not planet X.. but doesn't that mean we have 10 planets now?

From the page:
It is very likely that there are more big Kuiper Belt Objects like Quaoar. We looked at only 5% of the entire sky before finding Quaoar. So there could be 20 Quaoars out there and we wouldn't have seen them yet. It is also likely that a few Plutos are out there waiting to be discovered.

Actually it probably means that we now have 8 planets.
This discovery puts in doubt the status of Pluto as a planet.
I wouldn't be surprised if Pluto is officially reclassified as a "Kuiper belt object".

Pluto is by far the smallest planet and it doesn't fit into the "pattern" in the solar system. There are the 4 inner, terrestrial (rocky) planets and the 4 outer gas giants, seperated by the asteroid belt. All eight of these planets orbit the sun in more or less the same plane. Pluto is kind of the exception to this pattern, so it can't be considered a planet, although it is an arbitrary distinction. In size, orbit and composition, Quaoar is very similar to Pluto. There may be thousands of these types of objects in the outer solar system and I don't think we can consider them to be planets.
