Horse shit not colonizing

hello, this is spanky's first time growing on horse shit. he pasturized his dried/crumbled shit as directed and spawned (three 10x9" tray full of shit) it with four 1/2 pint birdseed jars per tray. all that are incubating at 83F. its been 5days and he sees no rhizomorphic growth, rather he's getting a very slow fluffy( almost whispy) growth. The fluffy growth is white, not gray. The moisture content of the shit seems right (not dripping). he also notices a bit of water droplets on the fluffy growth. he did make a slit on the cover to let any excess moisture out. Any suggestions would help....
spanky is hot!!

If myellium is growing you should be good to go if it isnt rhizomorphic growth dont sweat it some of my poo didnt look rhiz but if its going slow dunno why itd be doing that my spawn usually tears through the poo like hell.
Did you drain your poo for an hour or 2 after pasturizing??

I think spanky left it drained for 24 hrs before he spawned it. Yeah, he was also expecting the mycelium to rip through the shit in no time but shits not listening...

My badger has the "slow" problem as well. I think it is due to incu temps. Does anyone have any input?

If your mycelium is growing slow, but showing no signs of contams then the poo is probably too wet. I've heard of people placing a board on top of their pasturize poo (still in the pillow case of course) and jumping on the board to squeeze all the excess moisture out. When working with poo it is better to be too dry than a little wet. Wet poo colonizes slowly and is more prone to contamination.

Spanky took a chunk of uncolonized shit out of the spawn and squeezed it to check the moisture content. He saw water rising from the shit but not dripping (like what would happen when you squeeze the casing with good water content) . He was concerned about the possible contam (the fuzzy/ whispy growth) but he notices a smell of mycelium. So, no sign of contam. He sees slow growth through the birdseed chunks but nowhere through out the shit. It's been almost a week now since spawned. Problem? Again, too much moisture?

did you follow roadkills tek? did you let it drain for 24 hours? if not, it's probably too wet.

hmm, weird.. well my shit is barely damp when i spawn it.. i usually let it hang for 2 days, only 1 for straw.
I'm not really sure what could have went wrong, maybe it's just being slow - maybe it doesn't like something.
Appropriate moisture content i think is squeezing it as hard as you can, and feeling water well up, but having it not drip out.. or maybe just 1 or 2 drops

In your first post of this thread you said that you pasturized as directed, well what was directed? You may have overcooked your poo.

the tek he used was similar to roadkill's. he said he paturized it for a bit over 40 min but definately less than 60 minutes. He did not take the shit out of the water until the next day....he was wondering if leaving the shit in the water bath (which was still hot, but slowly cooling) could've had continuing pateurizing effect (he did remove the pot off the stove after pateurizing). If this was the case, assuming that the mycelium is not colonizing the shit due to over-pasteurization, could he respawn another pile of pateurized shit with the current spawn or would he have to use new birdseed spawn to start over? spanky appreciates your inputs!!

Heres what a friend does with excellent results:
First he pasturizes the Poo/Straw at 170 for 1 hour. As soon as the hour is up he get the pillowcase of Poo/Straw out and puts it in his sink. He then runs cold water over it until the sink is full. He lets it sit like that for about 15 minutes. He then lets the water that is in the sink drain out. Then he starts the cold water up again letting it constantly run on the Poo/Straw in the pollowcase. While this is running he sort of "Kneads" it, like one with do with bread dough. This assures that all the poo Cools. Within, about 30-40 Minutes the poo is cool enough. Then then procedes with taking the poo/straw out of the pillowcase, Squeezing all the excess water out (1 hand full at a time). Then he puts the freshly squeezed Poo/straw into his casing containers and adds his spawn. My friend has never found it necessary to let the poo/straw drain for any extended period of time. After all you are going to squeeze out all the water with your hands anyhow. And its a hell of alot faster when it comes to using it compared to waiting a day or 2.
