Wok still, is aluminium OK?
    #9401636 - 12/09/08 06:14 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I'd like to use my All American as a wok still, but it is made of aluminium.

Is this safe to use to distilling?

Thanks a lot, chaps.

Using an aluminium pot as the distilling kettle (3) of a wok still is no problem at all. Not just is the risk of aluminium in distilling slight, but the aluminium compounds that might form are not volatile - so the only thing in contact with the alcohol condensate is the wok and the collection vessel.

I use a 10 liter soup kettle as a distilling vessel and a vommon (thin) stainless steel wok on an ordinary gas stove and can convert 4 liter 13% alc into 1 liter 40-50% alc in an hour, heating time included.

Popular belief has it, in many countries, that aluminium causes Alzheimer's disease.

Many people in England refuse to cook with it, at home, despite the fact that most commercial kitchens use aluminium cookware.

Well, just because a lot of people believe something doesn't make it true.  Didn't research has discovere that there are higher levels of aluminum in people with Alzheimer's diesase?  And I'm going to guess people who heard about these findings somehow made up a connection between using aluminum cookware and Alzheimer's.

Aluminum pots is not recommended for beer brewing because it causes off flavors in the beer.  Don't know if it applies to distillation though.
