well if u dont know what they are, and youve been finding a lot of different psilocybes that are unknown, i wouldnt be the least bit surprised if they fruited now, or even took a long time to fruit.
i mean... next to nothing is known...
time will tell!
thanks for the documentation and photos though, i admire your research!

Anything is possible, especially on small isolated islands like New Zealand, one thing I have noticed is the long fruiting season starting up to one month before P. subaeruginosa and lasting into late winter, very similar to the fruiting season of Weraroa novaezelandiae which I suspect these to be closely related to, more so than P. subaeruginosa.

these look like they could be the intermediate species between the weraroa and subaeruginosa.

Thanks Bob, it is a very interesting place to live, the diversity of the fungi is mind boggling!
notorius, I suspect this to be the case and have a great species name that I think describes the morphology of the species very well and is also fun to pronounce, more specimens need to be collected for further study and description, hopefully this season coming up will be fruitful.

Yes I will save some for DNA analysis, it will be very interesting to find out how closely related these are to Psilocybe subaeruginosa and Weraroa novaezelandiae!
notorius, the season starts around mid april and continues until about the end of july, I know of only three natural areas where these fruit, all within 15 kilometers of each other, the other is a cultivated bed in my back garden that I hope will fruit this coming season!

Absolutely, this species seems to form fruit bodies rather slowly and I should be able to take pictures of their development as they progress!
