would it work if frank cased a cake of brf/verm that is only 50 or 60 percent colonized?
he just used the parts with mycelium on it, and cased with straight vermiculite.

The question is why ... If you want to case them because you are anxious, I would highly advise you don't, because of possible contamination problems. If, on the other hand, the jars have been stalled for a week or two with no further sign of growth, then you might as well.

If its been like that for a long time, open the jar and make your best assumption if its contaminated or not.

Yes it will work, if you cut off all of the uncolonised part.

I've done this with stalled jars that were 70 to 80% done without truble. Though I will note that casings made with said jars didn't yeild as well as those made with good, strong jars.
