Possible Cyanescens
    #939356 - 10/07/02 11:48 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Found in a large grassy area.
About ten feet away there were numerous trees and bushes
I'm taking a Spore print right now. Im am up in Bellingham, 2 hours north of Seattle and it has been raining the past few days. They were strung along the edge of a cement foundation that had bleachers on it. Not too sure about smell, smell kinda like dried cubensis do...
Sorry about the low quality pictures.

Edit: These are also quite wet and soft, I think perhaps yesterday they would have peaked and a lot of them started to decay.

if they were cyans, they probably would be bruised blue already from picking and handling.
if they are not, i would say be careful of the galerinas
i dont know what mushrooms get that wavyness, as a rule, other than cyans, but lots of mushrooms will get wavy on you.
all the cyans i ever saw in person were pretty damn easy to bruise, like they just were shortly after picking.
squeeze the base.

Viscid, after checking the Mapping the Mycelial Network it says that the galerina does not grow around here, also the galerina has a rusty brown spore print, cyans have a dark purple brown so that I well help I beleive. Also i have a friend who went picking last year and found a lot of cyans, these are all soft and mushy still so im still gonna wait for a bruise. Thanks though.

hey man, if you cant get it to bruise, here is a characteristic of psilocybes that i often find useful in the field, although some galerinas do this too.
oh, and i wouldnt trust that galerinas dont grow there. there are too many species of galerina to state that with any certainty. seriously, i would doubt that galerina autumnalis or some other galerina doesn't grow in the portland area.
in fact, now that i think about it, its bullshit.
anyway, to the point, a VISCID PELLICLE.
the very thin layer that covers the cap is the pellicle.
in most mushrooms, it is just skin. you can try to peel it off, but it just breaks.
in psilocybe, however, there is a fine skin that is gelatinous when moist, and if you try to break the cap, gently, the pellicle should be springy and try to hold the cap together.
im thinking that people in the pac nw are about to sart finding shit, especially cyans, so i am hopeful for you, but if you got no bluing, i doubt it.
just keep looking.
rhododendrons and mulched places.
good lookin out.

I broke the cap gently on one of them and the top layer of the cap held it together, im not sure if that is what you were talking about. And yeah I know of lots of people that have found cyans around here.

shit.
i wish i could help more.
if i knew where a picture of that gelatinous pellicle was.
it's in paul stamets psilocybin mushrooms of the world.
the picture is worth a thousand words.
the pellicle is SEPARABLE, meaning it pulls away from the flesh of the cap, and it is gelatinous, like translucent booger stuff, in some cases, you can pull it all the way off.
i would say, tho, without bruising, i cant help much more.
i know of no cyans that dont bruise some.

viscid, i can say rather certainly that G. autumnalis (or a closely related species) grows around protland.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
