I think the only think I would use pine needles for would to cover up some manure to hold in moisture. I believe pine trees make the surrounding soil very acidic, for what its worth. Who knows though, may work out, try it and see what happens.

I believe the turpintine that is present in pine would pose some problems also , at least ........ a lot of mutations .

Pine needles will not function as a substrate for P.C. shrooms. They contain to much adverse crap, nor contain the proper nutrient levels. You seldom, if ever see pine needles mold, unless they were composted several years. That is the first clue .

Yeah, I didn't think it would work for substrate either. What about pine needles that have been sitting for a while being used as a "top coat" to hold in moisture. Wonder if the needles after sitting would leech whatever chemicals contained that could harm fruits

Pine needles by their nature are pretty water proof. Meaning, they do not hold moisture -- well. Plus, the toxins in them could leach into a substrate.

Stick with peat , straw, verm etc............. Just like 6T said .......does not retain moisture well ......is pretty much water proof by nature ........also takes years in a sped up compost heap to break down , and then toxin risk is still always there .

Yeah, I normally stick to what has been proven. The exception might be doing a convert cake crumble which I thought might look better with pine needles covering instead of bright white straw.

Glad that doesn't apply to me.
And I made a typo that obviously threw you; convert should have been covert which to look better in that case is for camoflage not for beauty.
Now you know...
