Soaking grains, in leeched water from bulk sub?
    #9387132 - 12/07/08 06:47 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

I am preparing a batch of bulk substrate(coir, steer manure, coffee grounds, gypsum, blood meal, corn cobs)  I am using nylon mesh bag to pasteurize.  I would like to know if any one has tried to use the left over water to soak grains.  Tomorrow, I am making a bunch of quart jars with various grains(mainly wheat berries, amarenth, quionoa).  I am also making a few un-traditional BRF/verm cakes.  What if I used this nutrient rich water to soak the grains, and to mix the BRF/verm.  Any Thoughts?

And if so, how long do you think the water would keep in the fridge?  I would like to give my lc's a few more days to thicken up.

that's a great idea. i'm actually turning my stove on to do the same. just make sure you rinse and clean your grains before soaking in the strained water. i haven't tried to store that kinda water, but i'm sure you could, maybe a day or two is all i'd try for.

yeah, I am not to worried about the preparation of the grains. I was just curious if anyone had tried this before.  And if they had, did contams become an issue?  I really don't see a huge benefit in soaking the grains now that i think about it, unless it leads to faster colonization.  Eventually you will be spawning the grains to this type of mix anyways.  However, with the cakes, I think this could be a good way to give your mushies a balanced diet.

there is definitely benefits to it. soaking in that water won't make a huge difference in its speed. but if you have it why not use it. you want some gypsum and nitrogen in your substrate your mycelium will love it, and if you pc the correct time/pressure no contams should survive.

No offense, but i am somewhat skeptical. I read through your previous posts, and checked out your gallery(pitiful flush).  Are you new to growing, or just new to the shroomery?
