The Believer's Moving Targets

Original Claim: (circa 1985) The Face on Mars is proof of alien life. If only NASA would rephotograph it from a better angle and with higher resolution than before, the world would see what we are talking about.
Moving Target: (after the new photographs showing nothing unusual) NASA is hiding the "real" pictures. OR - It IS the Sphinx, just so highly eroded as to not be recognizable from this angle.
Original Claim: The Phoenix Lights were witnessed by 10,000 people and are certain proof of an alien fly-over.
Moving Target: (After the lights were unequivocably shown to be military flares.) This doesn't prove that other UFOs are not alien spacecraft.
Original Claim: Abductees are physically transported to alien ships.
Moving Target: (After sleep paralysis studies) We are more than just a physical body; their astral bodies were abducted.
Original Claim: Crop Circle researchers can tell a "real" circle from a fake one. No human could create an intricate circle overnight.
Moving Target: (A videographer DETAILS the entire process of making a fake. After which 3 "expert" cereologists declare the fake circle as real.) Well this doesn't prove that ALL circles are fake!
Original Claim: I can demonstrate telepathy at will.
Moving Target: (After failure) Of course I could not demonstrate telepathy with all the "negative energy" from skeptics blocking my transmission.
On and on it goes with a thousand more examples of weak dodges and pathetic "explanations" of why the mystery turned out to not be so mysterious. ANY reason at all can be used to hold on to some precious (and erroneous) belief.
This thread alone should get me down to a one-mushroom rating.

Original claim: Everything in the universe is made up of four elements- earth, air, water, and fire.
Moving target: This fails to hold up to scrutiny so the view is modified to include "atoms" of various sorts that comprise all matter.
Original claim: The earth is the center of the universe and the sun, stars, and planets all revolve around us.
Moving target: Again, this was changed to a model of the universe where we revolve around a typical star on the spiral arm of a typical galaxy among billions of others.
So what's your point?
And by the way, if this point of yours is beaten any further into the ground its going to come out the other side.

Huh? You equate incomplete knowledge and best-guess hypothesese with highly SPECIFIC claims?

Agreed. Swami, drop it. No one cares, this has been beaten into the ground.

The highly specific claims may also come from incomplete knowledge and best-guess hypotheses. I don't think any mystic claims to be the absolute source of knowledge in the universe (if one did I wouldn't take them very seriously).

But YOU care enough to respond and I am touched. Please point to a recent post by anyone that ACTUALLY covers new ground.

What... back-patting isn't new ground?
I think there have been a few posts in the past year that have pretty damn unique (new ground). Of course, the bulk (if not all) of them were made by "skeptics". Who cares, though, right? I mean, productivity isn't a measure of anything...

May I refer you to the works of W. Edwards Deming?
-------------------- To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.' Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence. Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains. Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Classic straw man argument. You'll never see a true believer talking about sphinxes on Mars and and Roswell rods and other nonsense. But I see plenty of skeptics bringing them up.

As long as my sarcasm was noted.

Unless you're being sarcastic... rods thread face on mars thread(note revelation's reply)
There are plenty more.

I shoudn't have said "true believers". I didn't mean to define true believers in that way. I should have said that not all believers believe those things.

My best buddy on the Shroomery S&P board. He is sort of the Anti-Swami.

I love you guys. Seriously. The world would be so much less bright if there were no shroomism/swami. The S&P metaphor for the duality that exists among all things in this universe.
