Atwood
    #938086 - 10/07/02 01:06 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I just finished 'The Robber Bride'. I sat down about three hours ago and swore by my heathenish Godzesses that I'd finish it tonight. It's been a long time since I've read a book so compulsively, but I really wanted to see how it ended. All in all, its the best Margaret Atwood I've read in a long, long time.

The sheer volume of characters, events, time, births, deaths, nastiness, and a whole other gamut of emotions and impressions. Add to that a horribly/wonderfully complex pattern of repeating images, always familiar but twisted just enough to catch you off guard. I think I always enjoy seeing half the authors hand; I like to know most of what's being done behind the scenes, but also being pleasantly mystified by all the stuff I know I'm missing.

Any other Atwood fans out there? Faves, recomendations, suchandsuch?

Read it, read it and read it. I think they did a movie for Handmaid's Tale, but I'm afraid to see how badly they could have mangled it.

Loved 'The Edible Woman'. It was my first Atwwod experience, though I thought it was pretty damn pointless at the time. Took me a few years, but I read it again and it just clicked. 'Surfacing' was nice too; short and sweet. Well, not sweet...more kind of bitter and disturbing.

Nasty. Best avoided, then. Once I see the movie, the book is never the same. Especially if the movie is freakin shitty.

I agrre about American psycho.  The movie was actually good.  I'm glad they didn't mangle that book.  Ellis is a great writer.
On to this Rules of Attraction.  I haven't read it and now I've seen previews so that blows reading it before I see it.  :frown:  Now I would have all those characters faces already filled in.  I hate that.
