Yes, and so can hypnosis (and other psychological techniques).

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Others praying for you (unbeknownst to you) can have no effect. Knowing that people care deeply about you can certainly have a positive effect in certain cases.

Not surprisingly, whether a coma patient is religious or not or prayed for or not has no effect. It is directed consciousness that can affect healing, not the intervention of some deity.

Taken from the first link: U.S. Goverment funded research on the matter
......
It analyzed 393 coronary care patients who were divided into two sections. One group was made up of patients who were not prayed for. But for the other group's members prayers were said regularly. Byrd discovered that the latter patients suffered significantly less from congestive heart failure, had fewer cardiopulmonary arrests, used fewer antibiotics and diuretics, had less pneumonia and were less frequently intubated.

Even more surprising," wrote the journal, Science & Spirit, "is the revelation that the patients...did not know that they were being prayed for, nor did their doctors." Science & Spirit concluded, "Byrd's study suggests that religiosity is a kind of antibiotic."

Could their be a God?

ill share with you my story. when i was born in the grand year of 1982 , i was born wih bilirubin, i was placed in an incubator after my birth for two weeks, i was getting somethinf like 15 shots a day through the bottoms of my feet, and i wasnt getting better. my family was obviously devastated. the dr said i was going to die in a matter of days, and there was neothing else they could do. my family prayed like no tomorrow, they brought in the family priest, and they prayed over me. in the next few days i was healed completely, with no damage of any sort. it was pronounced a miracle at the hospital, and it changed the dr's outlook on life, i know that b/c he kept in touch with fam

This ONE highly flawed is held as Gospel. I know I am expected to show every error as my "role" on the Shroomery. Do a little more research on it first and then try to post the whole picture.

My uncle had a brain tumor and almost the entire family went to his remote Vermont farm to comfort and pray for him. He died an agonizing death.

My ex-girlfriend's daughter had a a church group praying for her every single week along with her family and the best medical care available. She died suddenly after almost recovering.

What are my anecdotes are an amazing evidence of?

Remember, you can't have it both ways Shroomism.

When I was 6 I slammed into a car head-on while riding a bike that was going 20 mph in the opposite direction. After cracking the windshield with my head and flying 50 feet while skidding through the pavement, my only thought was death.

In the helicopter, I only wanted to look out of the window, but I was too tightly secured. They were sure I'd broken many things with perhaps some internal bleeding. Nope, broke nothing. Fractured a leg bone. Aside from that and the gravel embedded in my skin, I was ok.

Angels.. everyone kept saying... angels...or milk..

No bump on your head?

At 6 years of age... that much pain would make anyone think they were dying.

i'd be interested to see the actual study and the actual statistical procedures the Science and Spirit "journal" used. the title Science and Spirit makes it highly suspect. it's analogous to having a magazine called "Atheist and Christian Quarterly." i'd wager that this magazine uses "Science" to justify its believe in "Spirit."

Most of the time a prefix should be added to 'science' for a proper corellation.
I like to add the prefix 'pseudo', but you could possibly use another prefix.

Breaking down prayer into components,

Studies show that confession of what a person considers moral transgressions does (somehow) lead to positive change- a decrease of guilt or shame, and a corresponding reduction in anxiety.

Meditation does reduce anxiety, and prayer could be considered a form of meditation.

Those with a strong belief in God report less death anxiety (self report). Prayer may reinforce one's belief in God, thus reducing anxiety.

So it seems that it could be effective in lowering overal anxiety. However, if the prayer is as simple as a request for a favor to be fulfilled, I could see how it would lead to more harm than good- God is solely relied upon to bring about an important life change leading to disappointment.
