potting mix/compost, etc.

this might be silly to an experienced mushroom cultivator, but im a noob so im gonna ask.......why not just use pre-made mulch/compost, or potting soil to grow? has this been tried? why go through all the trouble with mixing grain and vermiculite and making your own substrate?

Because dirt is for plants, not mushrooms.
