Inky Caps

I tried the magic greenhouse a while back. I used wheatstraw and perlite for humidity. But when the substrate colonized i only got these thin very tall shrooms, the caps were just pure ink. They would get tall and die and it just left ink all over the substrate so i gave up, does anyone have any experience with these inky caps.

What kind of strain/species were you trying to grow?

You might have gotten a contaminated syringe (of another mushroom species) or something, Ive never really heard of this happening though.

They were Ecuadors, when they first started to pin they had a whit mily substance on the cap. They were very strange caps then they grew very large and the cap broke up and it looked like a flower. Then it just died and turned into ink. Very strange I know.

Sounds like a Coprinus, their caps turn to ink as they decompose. Perfectly edible before that tho.

Well, the inky cap is a common mushroom contaminant. Either your ecuador spores were contaminated, or you were not practice 100% sterile technique. I'd say try it again if you have any more spores, and if you get the inky's again, talk to your spore provider.

Inky caps are a very common contaminate of straw. How was the straw processed?
