Quick casing Questions
    #937245 - 10/06/02 08:10 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Ok so the other day i went to lowes and was buying supplis...I bought a bag of vermiclite, perlite, and sphagnum moss. While i was there i also saw a bag of compost marked "Mushroom Compost" it was cheap so I bought it. Now what i wondering is if i steralize it will it be good to mix in with the casing it containes over 90% pine bark and the rest is other shit found in the woods. It's a real dark soil.

also i have read on a couple posts that when casing the humidity will be high enough so I won't need to use perlite. I had planed to put in in the bottom of my aquarium and then setting my grow pans on top of it...

anyhelp will be greatly appreciated...also if i can use the compost in my casing what should the ratio to vermiculite and moss be...
thanks in advance

I wouldn't use the mushroom compost as a casing ingredient. stick to good old spag peat moss/verm/lime.

generally this is only true if you cover the entire growing chamber with casing. If you are using pans then you will need to add perlite. I found that for casings covering the whole bottom with perlite and then setting pans on top made it too humid. You might be better off putting a pan or two of perlite in there next to your casing pans instead.
