Wise Words to utter newbies...

Having just made a batch, and kicking myself several times for doing utterly stupid things, I empart these wise words to all true newbies to this hobby!!!
- When boilling, if you fill it up half way up a pint jar, then cramming 8 jars into the pot displaces enough water to make your jars flip over when they're boiling, totally ruining the jar.
- Rather than just pouring ammounts into a bowl, shovel it out with a freaking jar. You'll get a way more exact ammount!
- And if you try to stretch electrical tape to cover 2 holes at the same time, then leave the jars for 5 days, it shrinks back to its original size leaving the hole uncovered for 5 days....

Very good advice. I got burned by the first one too. Use masking tape instead of electrical tape for better results

I've done this to myself 3 times now, you'd think I'd figure it out, always poke holes in the lid, it sucks in alot of air after boiling, basicly innoculating it with air nasties.

Why would you leave the jars fo 5 days?? I don't understand why. Also why would you want to leave the jars uncovered for 5 days? Maybe im just slow, but hopefully you could clarify this for me. Thanx

Some people dont look at their jars for the first 5 days cause you probably wont see much, and it just stirs up contams anyways for you to stare at verm.
And I didnt mean to leave it uncovered for 5 days, thats what accidently happened, from stretching the electrical tape over 2 holes. It shrank back to the actual size of the piece and left the hole uncovered.... I'll make a diagram in paint if you want man : )

My words of advice.. Do -NOT- quick cool your pressure cooker!
It's -not- only because the jars may crack.. if you quick-cool it, you'll be sucking in loooots of air.. and a little gnome I know had 12 jars out of 12 contaminate with bacteria in that way.

If you let them cool in the cooker will they still suck in air like that? Oh but I guess the tinfoil would help some.

my friend used duct tape to cover the four holes but the PC blew holes through the tape. how could this be avoided? loosen jar lids before PCing? better/more tape?

If you put on jar lids upside down and keep the lid on loose you should be fine.

Air nasties are fucking mean. If you get air in your jars by say, not poking holes BEFORE boiling, you'll get 100% contamination. Dont even bother innoculating, the white "rhizomorphic" stuff you're so hopeful about under the innoculation points is just cobweb. : (
