One more thing,,, I probally didn't get all of my shit going right and had some contams, so I cased some more and got mold. It was probably left over from my old casings, yea I know I am a dipshit, but somebody already had that screen name, anyway all of my new casings came up molded DUH how do I sterilize the Perlite to use it again? contams would stay in my terrarium and get my new casings wouldn't they. thanks

Clean out your terrarium really well. Use diluted bleach, simple green, lysol, or whatever but get it clean. You can sterilize perlite in the oven by baking it for a while; then when it cools and you add water to it, add a little hydrogen peroxide to help prevent against contams. Perlite humidification and casings don't really go well together, and the mold in your casings could be from excessive humidity. Fan more often, or set up some kind of air exchange system (aquarium pump, holes in the container with filter patches over them to prevent contams from entering, etc) if you use perlite with casings.
I admire your desire to reuse materials, but perlite is pretty cheap so it might be easier to just go buy another bag of it.

Why do you say this.. from what I've heard casings and perlite go together well?

Its true and not true on the casing comment. Of course with perlit humidity is harder to regulate and casings need about 80 % RH. If you just spray down the calls and maybe have alittle perlite in the terr. under the casing it should be fine.

I've got my casings at 100% RH and they're doing great. I wish somebody could tell me why they have to be at 80% RH.

One point of casing is to keep the mycelium moist. A good casing will do a great job of this with minimal assistance (e.g. a light misting). Perlite in an enclosed space will lead to 100% humidity (by the methods outlined in the various perlite humidification teks on this site), which is fine for cakes, but too high for casings. When the humidity is too high, you are encouraging green mold growth more than mycelial growth. The surface of the casings can lose their porous texture, and pins will not be as numerous as they could be. You can still get some big shrooms out of casings kept at 100% if they don't contaminate, but you should see a marked increase in yield if you keep them a little less wet.
Using a smaller amount of perlite, you could probably get a rH closer to the levels you want for casings--85-92% during the fruiting stage--without fanning ten times a day. In practice perlite+casings can be done, but in my opinion, the combination generally creates unnecessary labor or expense to insure proper air exchange, and tends to promote a misunderstanding of the function of casing in mushroom cultivation.

They dont. The growth parameters for p. cubensis according to Stamets in The Mushroom Cultivator are as follows:
Spawn Run: Rh 90% Temp 84-86 10-14 days till full colonization.
Post Casing: Rh 90% + Temp 84-86 No air exchange No light 5-10 days till mycellium penetrates casing.
Primordia formation: Rh 95-100% Temp 74-78, Air exchange 1-3 per hour Diffused natural light 6-10 days till pinning.
Fruiting: Rh 85-92% Temp 74-78 Air exchange 1-3 per hour Diffused natural light Will flush every 5-8 days.

so with a casing should should i move to the fruiting chamber after the top is fully colonized or just until i see the myc.
