Do I NEED an incubator?
    #936646 - 10/06/02 02:17 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Im getting ready to make my first cakes today, i have everything needed. My only question is will the cakes colonize if i have them in a box in my closet? The temperature is about 80-85 degrees in there and its dark (unless i turn on the closet light). what do you guys think?

If you're sure that temperature will be constant than you should be OK as long as they don't dry out or get too much light. Keep an eye on those temps though. It would help if you had a thermometer that keeps track of the daily high/low in there. Incubators are not very expensive or difficult to put together though.

You don't NEED one, but you should want one. I did about 4 batches without one and my average colonizing time was about 4 weeks. I just built my styrofoam incubator with fishtank heater and my average colonizing time is just over 2 weeks. And I even wait until I see mycelium form before I put my jars in the incubator.

I disagree. Thats what my temp is and colonization takes only 1 week or alittle more for full colonization. 90 may be my self preference, but it still works.

Donno man, your thermometer might be off.

90 is indeed a little hot for them...Seems like there has been quite a bit of documentation and work surrounding the growth of Ps. Cubensis mycelium to be disagreeing but I guess it could happen!

I agree. 90 may work for you, but it is not the norm, but then what is in this hobby. If it aint broke don't fix it, but as far as optimum temps, I think its closer to the mid 80's than 90.
