What's this? (picture)
    #936446 - 10/06/02 12:25 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Just curious... what's this mushroom? I found it from a grassland quite near (5 meters) from some trees. There was also horse dung all over the place but I think this shroom wasn't growing directly on it. The whole length of the mushroom is little less that 3 inches (7 cm exactly).

The specimem is a bit young, but it resembles something near the pholiota specie.

no way dude, cortinarius .
cortinarius, 99 percent of em are poisonous.
cortinarius is named for it's CORTINATE veil. that cobwebby shit where the veil should be is "cortinate"....
they have rusty brown spores.
cortinarius is also the largest genus of mushrooms.
id to species can be impossible....without reagents and microscopes.
just learn what a cort is, then you can discard a great many mushrooms growing in woody debris. they can and will kill you.
go here.. http://www.bluewillowpages.com/mushroomexpert/corts.html
just read this, its only one page, then you'll understand.
"it aint gonna happen"

That looks like a young (immature) mushroom. Cut it in half and show us what the inside looks like (you probably won't be able to get a spore print). Immature mushrooms are tougher to ID than mature ones, although it is good to have mushrooms through all stages of development (except the rotting part) so you can see what they look like. If there were some more mature specimens around you might want to get some of those to show us.

Happy Mushrooming!

Sorry people... I already threw that mushroom away. The place I picked that one had about 5 more.. all about the same size. If I remember right the gills were dark brown... it didn't leave any spore print. I wasn't much interested since I was out to find Liberty Caps. GumbyDude.. my camera is Nikon Coolpix 995.... but I have also adjusted the pics with Photoshop --> sharpened (unsharp mask) and added more contrast.

No. I just said the truth. If somebody still wants to give an answer i'd appreciate that but it's not that important so umm.. whatever...

I definitely did not think that those were Ps. Semilanceatas.

Maybe some day. Now my goal is to find Liberty Caps and I think I can manage that without books.

Hey man, take care with what you do, really !! The knowlodge process is quite the opposite, first you study then you ID. Try to find online descriptions about Ps. semilanceata and try to compare as much characteristics as you can.
