Abduction and Sleep Paralysis
    #936014 -

Funny how the symptoms are identical. Which is more likely: unusual brain states or actual visitors that come ONLY during phase IV sleep?

My visitors come during any of the brain states, though theta and delta is easier for communication purposes. Alpha and Beta don't stop anything though..

And the only time I have been "Paralyzed" during an encounter was the first time when I was so scared I didn't want to move. Abduction is a term coined by fear operated persons who wish to view their contacts as a horrifying experience, they want to be a "victim", and choose not to take an active role.

My experiences are very unhindered, and relate to no symptons of sleep paralysis.

I think the answer to your question can be found in the mental state of the provider.

I like running in circles. It keeps me fit and trim.

i think those that haven't had the experience have zero right to right to criticize or probe until some blame or "rational" explaination can be made. so basically stfu and either be accepting of other peoples views or go walk infront of a bus.

[ stupid, semi-relevant story  ]

when I was 14, I think, at about 5am when I was waking, my foot accidentally turned on a boom box that was sitting on the end of my bed. the beginning weird-noise thing on Radiohead's "the bends" started playing... at the  same time a car was passing by and the headlights  shone through my window... in my half-awake state I was certain I was being abducted by aliens

chill out, eightball... what is your problem? if you don't like his opinion, ok... but that's no reason to go posting something like that... waste of your time, our time, and bandwitdh... there are other ways to express your opinions... you tell him to accept peoples views, yet you don't do it at all...

stfu=shut the fuck up

i'm not getting upset, i'm just expressing my displeasure in his mission to make the world swamified. i've read tons of his posts over the last year or so and well tonight i'm "wasting" my time by replying and stating he is ignorant and unfortunately will infect others with his bullheadedness and lack of compassion.

believe in anything you want if it makes you happy and makes the lives around you any better. THAT is the point of religion. that is the point of agreeing to disagree. you show compassion for others beliefs and you do not impose yours.

Re: Abduction and Sleep Paralysis [Re: Eightball]

Exactly how do you perceive that Swami's attributes will infect others?

Ignorance may be a plague but it is most assuredly not a virus. You cannot 'catch it' from someone else. And by this I am not intimating that Swami is either. For if you truly have read his posts as much as you say you have you would know why he seems skeptical, and if you know that, and show no compassion for him, it is you, dear friend, that is behind the eightball, not Swami.

As I mentioned earlier whenever I detect one of my nerves has been struck I look within to see why it hurts or rankles. The knowledge I gain from that helps me and others and is the true reason for my discomfort. Blaming others for what ails us rarely accomplishes the end we seek.

Go in peace,

I have no experience with murder, yet I criticize it.

I have no experience with child molestation, yet I criticize it.

I have no experience with jailing people, yet I criticize the WOD.

How many examples would you like?

Would you criticize a culture you've never been involved with?

Would you criticize a genre of music that you have barely ever listened to?

Would you criticize a person you don't know based upon rumours/physical appearance?

Why do you think it's alright to criticize someone's interpretation of a spiritual experience? These experiences are deep, meaningful and beautiful to the people experiencing them, and so long as they aren't using thier experience as an excuse to justify hurting another what harm does thier joy bring you?

Re: Abduction and Sleep Paralysis [Re: NiamhNyx]
    #937493 -

Sleep researchers noted the similarities in symptoms between paralysis sufferers and abduction claimants. Some abductees claimed to be physically abducted at the sleep research centers where they were videotaped all night and shown to have never left the room.

This tends to demonstrate pretty clearly in these cases that the abduction experience is an internal state and not a physical event.

What harm does better understanding a phenomena cause? Why the fear in adding to our knowledge base?

are you implying that such experiences are no longer deep, meaningful or beautiful when they are deconstructed? it is up to the experiencer
if someone doesn't want their ideas/experiences criticized by skeptics, he/she shouldn't post them in a public forum.

No, they are still meaningful when they are deconstructed, I do this to my own experiences. Being somewhat skeptical can be good, but it can often get way out of control in that you aren't *considering* that perceptions could be skewed, rather believing that they must be.

Ah, but does this lessen the validity of the experience? You might say yes, but some might say no....

Ah, but does this lessen the validity of the experience?

It lessens the validity that aliens have come from another galaxy to physically kidnap people which was one such hypothesis prior to this research.

I do experience sleep paralysis on a regular basis.....It started when I was fairly young 10yrs old or so.....  Back then I was a big Sci-Fi geek and I thought the experience was an alien abduction......

As I grew older I realized it was just the governmental mind control being enacted upon me

No seriously as I grew older and actually started paying attention when the paralysis happened....I realized that it was something else entirely and after doing a little research discovered the term "sleep paralysis".....

Perhaps swami has a valid point and many people are just so gung ho about being abducted that they turn something as annoying as this into someting else entirely....just a thought.
