TiT Question
    #9356413 - 12/03/08 07:36 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I think my TIT is the cause of my rye grain jars stalling.

How can I fix this problem. The Temp is always at a steady 77-79.

I can't leave the jars out in the open because the owner never puts the heat on.  So a TIT is my only steady source of heat for my grain jars.

ummm what ? you want to no know how to make a stalled grain jar colonize?
the only trick for that is flip it upside down.
what dose this question have to d with a TiT if you topic question had anything to do with your question you might have got an answer quicker.

I think he meant that the jars are stalling because his TiT isnt heating up enough because his landlord doesnt turn the heat up enough.
Anyway, get another heater in the TiT and you should be fine for heat.
And if that doesnt work, try turning them upside down like grod said.

are they brf jars or wbs?

anyways youll be fine if you want to fruit in the TiT - i think thats what you began to talk about... - just put some polyfilled holes on the sides about an inch about the substrate. maybe leave a fan on in the room to create some air movement. then you can create almost an automated TiT.

so youre using rye grain? give that jar a shake!! i like to shake my jars when theyre about 10%, then 50%, then 75%... this helps speed up the process.

the problem with the stalled jars maybe lack of moisture. or maybe too much of it. shake it or flip it - whichever you prefer and watch it for a couple days. maybe mark where the growth is at right now before you flip it to see if it has progressed some.

also what is the temp in the tub itself? mine usually stays at around 80 if i can. but i have pretty old aquarium heater... its been running 24/7 on full blast for 2 years. lol.

They were shakin ranging from 30-60% as some were more than others.  I think there is to much co2 building up as I'm not home enough to fan the tit as RR said once on a post, so that's why I was looking for another solution to get the co2 out while they sit an colonize

If anybody gets me....

drjugglz
you are recommending 3 shakes before colonization and one of them at 10% colonized?- i would think that would slow down growth, everytime that thing gets somewhere it gets pulverized and has to mend itself before colonizing anymore.
i wouldn't recommend that at all. i would recommend one shake at 50% and that its.

what type of lids do you have ? c02 buildup in the jars should not be present to the point they will stall jars. jars don't need to be fanned.

Just what RR said in his one video my lids have 4 holes at 1/16th size and two pieces of tyvek on them

When I said fan I was saying it toward the tit to get some fresh air in there as the air has to be stale

im experiencing it right now

cakes seem stalling, but grain blowing up.

same as you, its a constant 77ish degrees.

only thing is, my jars are in the water

and how do u know theyre stalled and not just slow colonizing?

mark the jars, and see if the myc is colonizing.

Before I get to my quote, what's a TiT?

Now, as far as the quote:

1)  Is there an over-all consensus or majority that says whether shaking is beneficial?  It seems like a lot of Teks suggest it, but people say it breaks the Mycelium and forces it to repair itself (stalling it temporarily).

2)  Does the aquarium heater work right without being submerged?  Or do you have water in your fruiting chamber?

H, its a TiT (tub in tub)

the bottom tub has water and a heater, the second tub fits in it and pushes the water up the sides. making a heater around the inside tub.

shaking is a must...but not a HAVE TO

i just took mine apart today for cleaning, and there was black mold, and some wierd white whispy almost myc looking things floating around btwn the two tubs.

took all jars out, wiped down with bleach, took the tubs outside and sprayed down with bleach.

fuck that incubator. guess my grain/cakes will have to attempt to colonize at FUCKIN COLD

not really sure what temp that is...

your jars will colonize at temps in the seventys fine . my house stays around 69 - 73f . Just put the jars on a shelf. incubators are verys contam prone and stall jars due to too much co2 buildup. even if your house gets in the fiftys your jars will colonize. just slower. quick question. do you see waterdroplets in the jars? most new comers to grain get the jars to wet which causes slow colonization \ stalling. too dry- they stall as well. its better to be on the dry side- grains rot in really wet conditions.

if im not mistaken RR has colonized and fruited cubes in the fortys- its just slower. actives that are fruited in lower temps are said to be noteworthy more potent as well.

For contamination in TiT's, I'd recommends mixing a bit of bleach in with your water in the lower tub.

To whoever asked if an aquarium heater will work outside of water, the answer is a big NO.  If you have a nice one, it will shut off automatically when its out of water.  If you have a shitty one, it will either break or burn your house down.

About shaking - I've always found that shaking once at about 30% is perfect.  They get to 30, you shake em, and once the mycelium has recovered, you're at 100%.  Any more shaking is just pissing the mycelium off more.

Someone also said something about fanning their incubator?  Definitely not necessary.  Taking the lid off every couple of days when you check for growth is all the gas exchange you need - they like the high CO2 environment while they are colonizing, and you don't want to dry out your jars.

If your jars are stalled, CO2 buildup might be a problem... but just turning 'em over should fix that.  More likely it's genetic or moisture-related.  Temperature shouldn't even be that big of an issue - they'll grow a little faster if they are somewhere in the 70-75 range, but they'll still grow at 60.

Seven, CO2 buildup is good during colonization, to a point anyways.

yes- excessive will stall jars- and colonizing bulk substrates. the co2 being expelled from jars, has no place to go inside a tub as it builds: causing growth to slow or stall if its to high.

co2 does not rise- you can get build up with no lid actually:if there is no air currents. this is why the holes for fae on mono tubs are right at the substrate level.
