my sony vaio wont turn on

ive never had a problem with my laptop until now, ive had it for a couple years. the other day i left for a few hours and the computer was on when i left.. i come home its off.. so i try to turn it on.. it wont turn on.. i check if the adaptor is plugged in, it is.. i just dont get it.. the battery's in.. the basic stuff, battery, and ac are there as usual.. when i press the power button the battery button does light up for some reason. i know the adaptor is ok cus it lights up when plugged in. and the battery shouldnt have any problems but even if it did if the adaptor is working and plugged in then it should work anyway. really frustrating, at least when there are other problems with the computer on you can actually try to do something.. two days like this and im using this piece of shit old computer that barely works just to type this.. its driving me insane.. anything over the net on this is incredibly slow and watching videos is horrible.. i need my usual computer back!

Just because the light on the AC adapter is on does not mean that the AC adapter is working properly.
I would remove the AC adapter, remove the battery, hold the power button down for 10 to 15 seconds, add the battery, add the AC adapter, and see if it turns on. Probably not, but worth a shot.

That is the first order of business. Believe it or not that will fix 50+ percent of the problems people have. Hold it down for 1 minute to make sure it gets all of the backed up voltage etc out...I guess that's a good word for it??
Check the button that is pushed when the lid is closed. It will often get stuck...
It could be a number of things...Power supply, mother board, voltage regulators, and so forth.
When I get back from this job interview I will write out some things to try to isolate the problem. My bet is the power supply...If it won't turn on AT ALL that's probably the problem. If it's the motherboard or something you will usually get some kind of action out of the PC.

i tried holding the button down.. not for an entire minute.. but for a bit.. i guess i could go for an entire minute... thanks for the help.. this is driving me crazy.. the computer is vital for me... i have everything on it.. not like thats unusual for most people these days, but i cant stress that enough anyway.. in this situation im not worried about all the stuff i have stored cus im sure the hard drive is fine this time.. in the past its always been something within the harddrive and the operating system.. this is a weird one.. and i have no money and a ton of other stuff that needs fixing so i dunno how im going to fix this.. and it seems like always with me i have the worst luck with anything electronic.. always breaking.. but ive never had anything like this where like you said you dont get anything out of it at all.. and i know the basic stuff to check to fix the various array of problems ive encountered in the past and day to day stuff.. but yeah this is a new one.. sorry i may not be typing too coherently because i havent slept in a few days and im in a pretty foul mood at this point. but again thanks mh and seuss . and hopefully you can help me out some more later like you said.

Okay, when you plug in your laptop it should have a light that lights up even if it isn't on...Letting you know that there is an AC connection active. Is that light on? If not, wiggle the cable a little be, and see if you can get it to blink on.
If it does you will need to open it up to see if the internal jack is loose...But if it isn't loose then the adapter may be bad itself.
If the light isn't on take out the batter, and plug it in and see if it will boot without a batter...If so it's obviously your batter, or try to reseat the battery better.
You may need to check your voltage inside of the laptop itself, but that's the last order of business.
If none of this works I will post a chart to help you figure out what is wrong...It's a very good chart that if followed will tell you whats wrong. My bet is still on the power supply...
But try these first, and let me know. Then I'll post the chart if everything looks ok.

By the way... if i was able to get a new laptop, would you suggest an Apple Mac Pro? A friend of mine has one and loves it for a variety of reasons. Its a long shot since i dont have much money, but it may be possible for christmas as a gift if i am lucky or if i can go about some type of payment plan or loan from a friend.

I personally don't like Mac's...But then again I hate Windows Vista. If you are either going to run Vista or get a Mac then I suggest getting yourself a Mac. But if you can get a Dell with Windows XP then I would take that in to consideration.
I run Linux mainly, but I don't like Mac's. For the average user a Mac is fine though.

Looks like you're in luck if the thing's power plug crapped out.
http://www.insidemylaptop.com/take-apart-sony-vaio-vgn-fz220-repair-power-jack/
At least some vaio's appear to have taken the amazingly simple step of using a power plug not directly soldered to the mainboard.
Now if only Dell, among others, would spend the extra $1 to do the same, we wouldn't have to pay 500$ (according to them) to replace the whole motherboard everytime the power jack fails (every six months).

there isnt any light that comes on if i plug in the power plug/adapter, or wiggle it, even if not on. if i take out the battery, the battery light turns off and if i put it back in and press the power button, with or without an adapter the battery light lights up... dunno if thats because theres something wrong with the battery or just because its out of power.

Some won't work without their batteries...You will have to look that up on google I don't know what model you have, and probably wouldn't know whether it does or not anyway.
So, if you turn it on with the battery the light lights up, as if it were turning on?? Do you hear any fans going, or your hard drive sound like it's doing anything? I know it's a dumb question but I have to ask.
Let me get this right...So, when you turn plug the battery back in it does nothing...Unless you press the power button, and then the light comes on?

no.. only the battery light comes on if the battery is put in and the power button is pressed, not the computer or power light... or hd, fans.. etc.. but thats what i mean by computer.

wait a sec... i was thinking that also, but then if the adapter power light lights up on the adapter and not the computer what does that mean... see this is what i was just thinking about and im not sure if you meant the indicator light on the computer or the adapter itself. i was talking about the corresponding light on the computer. on the adapter, the light does light up when plugged into an outlet.. maybe i was thinking about this correctly in the first place.. haha, sorry.. just trying to make sure.

If it were something like the motherboard...Or the voltage regulator...Something like this it would do something 99 percent of the time.
If you want to make sure it's nothing else...A.) You can go ask a computer shop to test it for you. Some do it free...The place I used to work did, but others don't.
or B.) Open it up yourself, and take out every single item in the computer...Like the memory sticks just, and see if it powers up...Usually it would power up anyway, but this is just if you want to.
Take out the cd/dvd drives...Take out the video card...Etc.
A good bit of the time if you do this it will boot up, and that is a good sign that it's the power supply...It can't take the load.
You are probably going to have to take it to a shop anyway...Laptops are a pain in the ass to replace things like that.

Yea, I was talking about on the computer. It is wired straight to the battery/AC jack...Basically. So, it will still light up if the power supply is bad...It has nothing to do with it...And even if the power supply is bad it may still light up. The power supply just may not have enough power to boot the entire system. That light takes very little as you know to power.

Try to find a shop that will diagnose it for free...Tell them you think it's the power supply, and ask them to verify it for you...Tell them you either want them to fix it or to buy a new supply and fix it yourself...They should tell you.

yeah, I'm just saying depending on the failure you may not feel much. If the plastic seats or whatever they use are firmly attached the plug may not wiggle much even with a broken solder point or a worn out jack.
Either way, it seems like Sony does shit right and doesn't neccesarily solder to the motherboard, which will be the single biggest factor deciding what laptop I buy next.

All the light on the AC Adapter means is that the AC Adapter is plugged in and getting power. It does not mean that the AC Adapter is working properly and able to output the proper voltages and current under load.
