You can use watered down coffee to hydrate it instead of regular water.  It speeds up colonization.

The last batch of cakes I made, I just added a few coffee beans to the grains as I ground them into flour.  It';s been 4 days since I inoculated (via LC) and some of the cakes are halfway colonized already.

from what i understand, brown rice itself is about the most nutritious thing for myc.  I've heard of people having good results rolling in peat instead of verm.

With cakes don't bother with any additives. Additives are for bulk substrates.

The cake formula is tried and tested and has one of the highest biological efficiencies among the different substrates.

Messing about with the formula is risking total failure. Bulk substrates are a lot more forgiving than the PF mix.

I would not recommend any modification but if you really must, don't do anything but the coffee ones.

I have never understood why people make it so very complicated for themselves. Now, if you have time and want to experiment, that's another thing. But if you just want to grow shrooms, then go the KISS way (keep it simple, stupid!). Adding extra steps of work is introducing possible points of failure. And as it has been said, BRF has everything that the mushies need to prosper.

That's what I meant when I said "if you have time and want to experiment".
