Faster colonization?
    #934920 - 10/05/02 06:30 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I read of putting a layer of Verm at the bottom of the jar as well as the top to help it colonize around the bottom faster. However I read this after I had already made my jars.

I was just wondering if you think it would hurt if I turned the jar upside down and tapped it to loosen the cake away from the bottom of the jar? I would think it would help, would it not? I just don't want to hurt the myc.

Prolly a dumb question but hey.. its my first cultivation... don't want to screw it up.

BTW, so far 10 jars of PR's at about 50-75% colonized (first timer) with no signs of contams!

If this is your first cultivation attempt, I would recommend that you pick a tek and follow it. Then once you get a better understanding of how it works you can make adjustments. I've never put verm on the bottom. You should be more concerned with keeping the temp in the mid 80's. That will help your jars colonise faster.

If the cake has begun to shrink to the point that you can tap it away from the bottom, but still is snug on the sides you can run into problems. when you turn the jar over again that cake will eventually settle back to the bottom, and it will suck in air as it does so(like a vacuum) and it can suck in contaminates, even through the vermiculite layer.

i did 4 cakes of EQ 2 with verm at the bottom and two with out it, the 2 with out verm at the bottom finished about 3 days before the ones with verm at the bottom. this is just in my experience though

I personally have never added a layer of verm to the bottom of my jars....that would actually make for an even smaller cake in the end.

If you want to help it colonize the bottom quicker you can flip the jar. Do not tap, shake or do any of that. The cake will slowly slip away from the bottom. Usually once I see mycelium hit the bottom, I flip my jars.

Although adding a bottom layer of verm may help it not stick to the bottom, it is taking away from the actual size and nutes the cake could have. Not a thing i think i'm big on. Dry layer of verm will not colonize like the brf/verm mixture.
