HD DVD with a DVD player
    #9345440 - 12/01/08 06:50 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I just bought Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas off eBay and the fucker won't play in my DVD player!!!:megacrankey:

Is there any kind of program that I can download so I can watch it from my computer? I have a DVD drive.
:fearandloathing:

the only way to play an HDDVD is with an HD-DVD player, a regular dvd rom cannot play it.  So either buy a hd-dvd player, by a hd-dvd rom for your computer, or, do the smart thing, and drop the whole deal, and see if you can get a refund.  HD-DVD died a few months ago when blu-ray was decided as the winning format, so the purchase of a player would be a waste of money, though they are probably really cheap right now.

peace

Yeah I think you're morally obliged to either return it or download it from a torrent. Unfortunately, the latter is still illegal (for now).

well, since he owns the disc now, even though its hd-dvd, i would think it is legal for him to download a copy under fair use laws.  I'm not sure on this, but it is still legal to backup your own movies if you own them, just not sure if downloading is considered a backup.

peace

AFAIK, it's not. You're right, of course, it should be considered a backup, or "format-shifting", which has been ruled legal. But it's not, yet.

Are you guys really concerned with the legal issues of downloading a movie off the internet?

Excuse me if I am ignorant but is it really that risky?

no not really, but there is absolutley no harm in discussing.  What ever made you think we were actually concerned about it?

Yeah I'm not concerned, it's just that it's good to know what is and isn't legal.

I'm never concerned with whether anything is legal or not. I just have to know the odds of getting busted and if the risk is worth the consequence.
