hey why do you think you'r getting aborts? can you tell me the specs of your setup?
I pull mine by just twisting them off with 2 fingers...usually causes some bruising, but im sure its cool.

well the terrarium's temp fluctuates between 73-76 degrees. the humidity is probably too high. its at 99% or higher. i have 3 cakes all of them started to grow mushies. they got 2 inches long and are really skinny and then they just stopped. 2 of the cakes only got one of these and the third got like 4. recently in the past 2 days new ones started growing around the ones that had stopped on the one with 4 and they are more robust and i can tell they are going to grow big. i tried pulling the ones off that stopped growing but i accidently pulled off a new growing one and i got pissed and i stopped. i also have a casing (my first) that is starting to grow mushies also but i have had no aborts. all of them look like they will grow big(about 8 of them).

My Iguana performs a water treatment on his cakes...cuts them in half, places them back in the jar, fills with spring water...places saran wrap over..puts lid back on and places in the frige for 24 hours before he births them. He says he does that because it speeds up pinning time...by hydrating the cake enough that it does not require the extra time after birthing to soak up H2O from the moist perlite and the humidity in the air. Iguana's mushrooms grow from the TOP of the cake, too!!! I have noticed that about a day after birthing his cakes, they grow white fuzzy around them...THEN pin. He says the white fuzzy is a good thing.

When growing off cakes, abhorts are common and basically expected. I have found twisting the best way to pick them.

I'm far from an expert, but it kind of sounds like there is an excess of CO2, which stunted the growth of the mushrooms. If this is the case, better ventilation might help.
-------------------- Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually who are we not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
