Touching the bottom of the terrarium...
    #925950 - 10/02/02 06:44 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Last question, I promise

I've got a cake that has around 6 or 7 shrooms growing off of the bottom of it (the side with the vermiculite.) The largest (around 2 inches I'd guess, cap hasn't begun to break away yet) is growing out nearly completely horizontally and consequently touching the perlite.

Will this stunt the growth of the shroom or cause to grow abnormally?

If so, how can I fix it?

I'm not sure how pertinent this information is,  but my terrarium's base and four surrounding walls are translucent with the top opaque (Rubbermaid container). I know 'shrooms are phototropic, so may be the light only coming in through the sides causes them to grow horizontally?

Having the shroom touch the perlite will proabably just make it more fat than long. Fat shrooms have a lot more water in them and rot a lot easier, so keep an eye on it. Yeah, the light coming in the sides is probably causing your problem. Tape some paper or foil around the outside of the terrarium to make it more opaque.

I don't want the terrarium to be completely opaque do I? Would it not be best to get a different type of lid (if possible) that is transparent/translucent?

i always flipped my rubbermaid over and used the lid as the floor of the terrarium. just make sure your lid can support the weight of perlite and cakes without flexing too much because it will ruin your seal. it doesn't have to be airtight, but it can't have gaping holes between the lid and the container.

Ooops.  I meant just the sides of the container.  You do want a translucent lid.  I just cut a big hole in the rubbermaid/terraium lid and glue a piece of plexiglass to cover the hole.

What did you use to glue the plexiglass down? Silicone adhesive didn't work...

Use hot glue.
