Too dry?
    #933689 - 10/05/02 02:40 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I used the High Fun Guy's 10-step tek with some P. Hawaiian ... and sterilized my jars by boling like it says on there. instead of usin the mesuring cup to throw a 1/4 cup in each 1/2pint jar i put 50cc's of the water mixed with spores on each. should that be enough... they seemed too dry to me... how can i tell? this is the second day... no growth yet.
thanx,
the sheep

Did you put spores in, THEN boil them?

Were the jars hot to the touch, or even warm?

Also, if they were too dry looking, they might have been. I am not sure if this will cause NO growth, but it will deff inhibit it. God I cant spell.

when i shaked them the first time, they seemed "wet" enough, but i took a look today(second day) and when i tipped it to look at the bottom, i could hear the stuff inside shaking around.

I always PC my jars, so I am no boiling Xpert. But.....

If your jars were warmer than your hand. You as a human are around 98F. And if you touch something that is hotter than that, it will be hot/warm to you. Spores die @ 109F. 98F and 109F are pretty close. So if they were warm/hot to you, they might have still been to hot to inocu. Just my Exp, I have had plenty more jars not grow due to hot inocu's rather than contams.

2 hrs doesnt seem long enough to me, but I am no boiling expert. Maybe a boiling expert will come on and lend ya a hand.

well, i only used that tek on 4 jars to see how it would work... i PC 8 more and inoculated with some Tazmanian... so if the P. Hawaiian dont grow, i still have some hope for succes...may God keep away contams.

im not shakin them, i only shaked them when i inoculated cuz it says on there to do it... to let all the water+spores spread around evenly. i havent shaked them since, i only tipped the jar over to look at the bottom.

It's too early to tell if you have a dryness problem, it's only been 2 days, wait at least 7 days, and stop checking on it so often. A watched pot never boils.

ok, so lets say that in about a week or so, no growth is seen... should i just boil some more water and add it in? or chunk them?

I'm not sure that will work to well. You can try to inject in more water, but you can't mix it up to spread it throughout the jar evenly. If the mycelium stops growing after a certain point, inject more where the mycelium is, that might work. If it's is at least 50% colonized, you can case it or put it in a terrarium to finish off the colonization. It'll just take longer if it's not 100% colonized.

Never saw a tek like that before. Would seem to me you are just giving yourself a better chance for contams to get in your jars. I don't think 2 hours is enough time for cooling, they may feel cool to the touch but could be much hotter in the middle. Usually let sit overnite.
