Those are not Clitocybe nuda, the Blewit, they are Panus conchatus.

Starting from the top:

Coprinopsis lagopus

Maybe Tubaria furfuracea

More Panus conchatus

The "golden gills" also look like Tubaria furfuracea

Slimy Russula species

Maybe Omphalotus olivascens

Lastly Bolbitius vitellinus

Smily, were the above mushrooms found in different habitat?  Was the top one growing from leaf litter or woody debri?  If so, the top one is probably Clitocybe nuda, however the others are Panus conchatus.

Is that what you were getting at Alan?  Surely the rest are P. conchatus.

EDIT:  oh sorry- I see cptngarden was only referring to the one, top photo.  Sorry Cptn!

CC the 2 pictured were POPPED out a dead log like plugs you can still see it in the base where it popped out the log. the cluster was in a split and the single was in the same log but in a hole.

ohhh and the leaf was a cling-on from the gather bag. should have removed it sorry.

Smily, I did see the wood fibers but in reconsideration of Clitocybe nuda, I thought it might be a chip of wood on the ground.

Well if the first one was growing directly from wood, off the same log as the other two, then that casts doubt on the first one being C. nuda

Has anyone ever collected a Blewit from a log?  It is certainly possible, but I'm just not sure I've ever seen it.

You don't necessarily need to do that, there is no guarantee that mushrooms would still be fruiting there.

I was just curious since I've not seen Blewits grow directly off wood.  Based on that feature and the fact that it was on the same log as Panus conchatus makes me think that the first is not C. nuda, but another P. conchatus.

How will you prove anything without fruiting bodies??  And even then, a spore print would have solved the mystery, though I bet they are dry now.  Of course there is a good chance that Alan or I could ID the dried specimens if you had one of each  to compare.

It will be hard for anyone to say with certainty if it is one species or the other by just looking at a photo.

I'm sure you could answer the question by reading the description of the two potential species, and comparing photos.  I mean, you had the mushroom in hand.

Yeah, Smily actually DID bring all of the mushrooms in this thread to the Fungus Fair this weekend (  you rule, Smily), and had me inspect the purple mushroom in question.  They were all P. conchatus.
