Well the green has claimed another victim
    #933100 - 10/04/02 08:53 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

Well the casing looked good until the very last minute, and then the green was noticed. Before that there was even a pleasant mushroom smell coming from the casing, and my friend was certain it would work. Maybe it wasn't trych but it was greenish blue. At first I thought it might just be dehydrated mycelium. He was hand fanning and hand misting 5 times a day but I guess that wasn't enough since he was at work all day so it remained unfanned for some 11 hours straight daily. He even woke up in the middle of the night to take care of his babies.

So now he will try to build something similar to hydrapod and hope for the best. If the hydrapod was something like 50 or even 75 American, he would gladly pay for one. But at 130-170, he says that will try to improvise.

That's the second failed attempt. Third time's the charm hopefully :-)

Dont get discouraged. Maybe you need to clean up a little bit. It happens to everyone. Try cleaning out your terr. with some bleach solution and you should be fine to get another go at it. I would rinise the perlite off if thats what your using. But sorry for your lose :frown:

Hi Matts. He used plain verm casing. That doesn't need lime does it? In any case, he will either go with a pod (home made or otherwise) or he won't grow at all. He doesn't have the time to fan so often; for the past few weeks his life was devoted to it and he was a prisoner at his own home. So it's automation or nothing :-)

Oh yeah and one more question: how clean is the "fresh" air that comes out of an aquarium air pump? Does it get dirtier with use? Does it need to be filtered, by using something like a hepa filter? Thanks. I want this third attempt to be contam free. Up yours contams! Suck my bluing doggie dick lol!

Yes you should filter the air going to the Air pump.

You should pull the rubber bottom off the Aquarium air pump and put a filter disc over the bottom instead of the rubber.
Then put the rubber on where the top was.....duct tape it all up.....then flip it so the filter disc side is up^.

Waaaa laaaaa filtered air.

This is my old one.....it burned out....it was 16 years old.

I have a couple new ones now!

good luck!

Why fan so often? I find two or three times a day to be plenty. After a point I think fanning would almost become more damaging then good. Introducing contams and dispersing humdity before it gets the chance to build up!!

Anyhow, just my thoughts!! G'luck with your stuff in the future!!

you may be right about the fanning. He was fanning like crazy because he thought that would eliminate the risk of the green. Well who's laughing now. Not him lol!

hi Roadkill, thanks for your illustrated reply :-) I'm curious why you personally use an air pump? Are you using a homemade pod or some kind of semi-automated setup? Cakes or casings?

Thanks dude

if you're going pod tek, i suggest that you not try to substitute perlite for the much larger and heavier geolite. the geolite is large and heavy enough to not move around. i imagine perlite would become a bubbling perlite stew that your cakes won't like to be put on. just a suggestion.

I use the air pump for everything.
I don't do cakes anymore....but it worked great for them when I did.
I only do casings now.....and they like the extra air exchange.

Yes I also have a hydra-pod....it has its own air pump.

you really don't need to be fanning your cakes more than 2 or 3 times a day.

good luck!
