I thought we were discussing herds and groups and suddenly it is all about your sexual preferences? :nonono:

gotta detach from the urge to sex, and just sit back and watch.  and maybe something else too.

Hey, a herd has to start from somewhere.

I came across these yesterday and thought they were very appropriate for the theme of this thread:

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. - Friedrich Nietzsche

I am not eccentric. It's just that I am more alive than most people. I am an unpopular electric eel set in a pond of goldfish. - Dame Edith Sitwell

I was part of that strange race of people aptly described as spending their lives doing things they detest to make money they don't want to buy things they don't need to impress people they dislike. - Emile Henry Gauvreau

The world is like a ride at an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think that it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly coloured, and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question - is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us. They say 'Hey! Don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride.' And we...kill those people. We have a lot invested in this ride.  - Bill Hicks

When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in confederacy against him. - Jonathan Swift

What are all of these people chasing? It's nearly funny. In droves, like flocks of blind sheep, they mindlessly adhere to silly desires, silly norms, silly commandments. Is it real? I'm almost afraid to trip anymore... I'm tired of awareness.

Sadly, it so often seems that no one is engaging in self-expression, no one is living in the present moment, no one is enjoying being alive and breathing. Thinking outside of the box now means you voted for a particular candidate. What freedom, what intellectualism.

Do you believe what I am experiencing is paranoia, or is this a universal feeling or thought process that some people occasionally experience throughout their lives? Is it fuel for the fire of creativity, or fuel for the fire of depression?

It feels that in reality I am more near to the truth. Despite a proliferation of technology, science, art, history, medicine, etc. the majority our fellow humans are still primordial soup, being sucked into meme games of wealth, success, and distraction. It seems there has genuinely been an increase in materialism, greed, and selfishness--on both a global and personal level.

I'm still somewhat grounded and easily able to acknowledge that how one lives their life is an individual choice--one that is subjective and relative to many different factors. The irony is that a person may look at me and feel that I am a waste of life, though I feel the same about them.

Sanity doesn't come without a cost.

Terence Mckenna once made a good point by saying that those who are not tempted by cultural illusions will have the liberty of an expanded consciousness, but will consequently deal with alienation and loneliness.

Would you say that drugs have become your control mechanism for awareness? Your post is a series of conflicting statements.

What about psychedelics? Have they become a force that expels people from the herd?

I think they help people to at least realize the existence of a herd mentality, and possibly provide inspiration for an individual to deviate from the inherent norms. It certainly isn't a panacea, otherwise we could spike the water system and be through with it... of course, then we are just reorganizing a new herd. It's ironic. It seems the hive collective is innate in human consciousness, and much of cross-cultural psychology research seems to indicate this. Which, on an emotional level, an acknowledgment of this doesn't remove the frustration or ennui.
