perlite RH too high for casings?
    #931417 - 10/04/02 10:42 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I have noticed that with even the shallowest layer of scarcely moistened perlite, my terarrium reaches 100% relative humidity in no time. This is true for small rubbermaid containers, as well as large (2'x1.5'x1.5') coolers. This would be fine for cakes, but I am told to keep R.H. around 90% for casings. This leads me to a few questions:
1. If perlite humidification is so effective, why bother with humidifiers/vaporizors?
2. Will 100% R.H. be too much humidity for casings?
3. Can I use a terarrium with no perlite - just the casing to create humidity?
4. I have been leaving the terrarium lid ajar, this keeps the RH around 95%. Is this going to invite contams?
Any thoughts much appreciated.
mike

Well it depends on how many casings you have in your terrarium. If you have it completely full with casings, you wont even need any perlite. The moisture that is being evaporated from the casing itself is sufficient to keep humidity at an optimum level. You will most likely need to hand mist and hand fan.

1)First off, perlite is great, just messy.
2)No, they will still fruit, but, you will want to definetly fan more
3)Yes, as stated above
4)Possibly. Best would be to poke 1/4 inch holes around the bottom of the terrarium, and fill with polyfill or cotton balls. This will allow air exchange and keep humidity lower w/o contams
