Windoze killed my hard drive

Heres my story, sad but true. I installed XP, after being talked into it by a friend. I didn't like it at first, but after getting used to its geh qualities, it was OK. So, I decided to add another hard drive, to back up my important stuff (music, emails etc), ironic!. I backed up all my stuff off my second hard drive onto my main one, and was gonna use the new one as a secondary, a back up, and a scratch disk. I did the partition stuff on the new one, then booted into windoze, cool. Then that stupid bubble pops up, new hardware found, this is when time froze, so did my hard drive. As windoze was installing the drivers for my new hard drive, it decided to kill my old one, the one with all my data on. A very sad day indeed. I feel like I lost my memory, indeed I have lost all data that was important to me, my contacts, my emails, music, artwork, my life is gone
So, now I wander through an unknown wilderness, all aspects of my cyber self missing.
The huge feeling of loss, has actually amazed me. Like part of my brain was removed.
Any sympathy will be greatfully received. Any ideas on how to reclaim my data of my HD which shows disk read error in dos, and 0 byte hard drive in windows would be even more greatfully received.
Its as tho windoze said 'Oh you've got a new hard drive, I'll kill the old one, muhahaha' Bastard.
Good luck

I feel you more than words can say bro. I lost about 80 gigs of music, movies and games when trying to setup WinXP I have a program that will help you recover a few things, but I wouldn;t count on it for your whole HD back, since that's prolly gone by now, but if you want, it's all yours man

As I understand it... there are dip switches on some drives to set them up as the master drive.. slave drive etc.. It sounds like Windows might of got the drives confused.

Dont format the drive you backed up your stuff onto..it still might be there. Windows just can't read it...
You should have removed your back up drive after everything was backed up and worked only on the drive you were going to intall windows onto... Not too many people know this, but, you can boot to a windows xp UPGRADE cd and do a fresh install INSTEAD of installing XP over and existing operating system.
Remember that scene in Pink Floyd's "THE WALL" where Bob Geldoff is in his room makin a mosaic on the floor from all the shit that he broke?.... That would be me if I lost everything on my hard drive.. Think im going to back some stuff up now...ttyl...

That's shitty, I once lost about 60GB of files in a hard drive crash and it sucked really bad. I dunno how much you know about computers so forgive me if you've tried these steps.
First, make sure you have the jumpers set correctly on the drives. If they're on the same cable, one has to be master and the other has to be slave. If they're on seperate channels, make sure they don't conflict with any other drives in your system. Check that both drives show up in the BIOS when you boot.
Right-click My Computer and choose Manage. Select Disk Management. Look on the list to see if your drive is there. If it says "Foreign" next to its name you can right-click on the partition and select Reactivate Volume. You may need to assign a drive letter by right-clicking and choosing Change Drive Letter And Paths.
If the volume is showing up as 0 bytes in Disk Administrator you might want to try running a chkdsk on the drive... I've actually had it fix problems like that before. Run "chkdsk d: /R /X" where d: is the letter of your bad drive.
You could try getting a diagnostic program from the company that made your drive... if it's Maxtor or Quantum, download Powermax. For Western Digital, get Data Lifeguard. Most other hard drive manufacturers have similar utilities.
As a last resort, there's software like Ontrack's EasyRecovery DataRecovery which has a pretty good chance of finding your data.
Good luck!
Peace,

I very much know how you feel. My IBM 30 gig drive had a hardware problem 3 months ago,it was the secondary drive , and among other things I lost around 20 gig of downloaded mp3 files and 2 years worth of pictures I took with my digital camera, soveral thousands of them.
But the life goes on, it?s good to start anew from time to time.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, I had the jumpers correct, and went into the bios first to make sure they were autodetected and showing as slave + master etc.
I will try your other suggestions tonight, fingers crossed thanks for taking the time to post them.
Yes, Anno, life moves on and it does kinda feel like a rebirth. It was still pretty shitty and same as you it was an IBM disk, no more than 9 months old bastard.
Maybe all is not lost.
Good luck

My pleasure, I'm glad it worked! When you said it was an IBM hard drive, I got a little nervous - some people have been having some serious problems with them. Looks like you got lucky!

Wow, its been a long time since I've seen chkdsk solve a problem.
I used to use it routinely in DOS 3.1/5.0 days, but not at all for the last few years at least.

Well, it solved the problem, but some of the data was missing. So, I got hold of easyrecovery proffessional and that got the rest of it back
Good luck

How odd, IBM drives seem like shit.. My dad's IBM HD broke after 11 months, a reading arm thingie broke off. Broke off! Come on! 10 gigs of data lost and if he had wanted to get the data back he would have had to buy the broken drive back from IBM..
It happened just as we were going to burn his stuff on the new CDRW we brought. Funnee.

I always thought Seagate was top of the line.. but in the last 12 months I've had 2 brand new Barracuda 40gigs get bad sectors within weeks of purchase. Luckily no data lost, you really need to make sure everything important is burned onto cd.
